As I watched my teen daughter return to dance, it reminded me of the joy and sense of community I felt as a dancer at her age. I was curious if I could get the same benefits now, but dismissed it. One day, while I was on my way home, I saw a dance school nearby and decided to explore their class options. I was thrilled to learn they offered a ballet class for adults. I signed up for a trial, and I was hooked. Janicka was the best teacher. She was professional and motivating. She explained every move in a way that made it make sense and took the fear of getting hurt or looking silly away. After all, I was in my 40's, a bit overweight and had not danced in decades. As my heart rate rose and my legs shook, I got more and more hooked. After each class, I would drive home in the best of moods, feeling accomplished and happy. My time in ballet class is a day and time and look forward to each week. While there, I don't think about the stress of life, and just focus on getting better each week. It is fun, rewarding and I enjoy the people there. We are all trying and encouraging each other as we build our skills. I would go every day if I could!

I’ve been taking ballet classes at Art of VIII with Janicka Arthur for about a year now and I can’t say anything but great things! I’m a beginner and I fell in love with her classes and ballet. I encourage all novice and returning dancers if they’ve ever been interested in adult ballet classes. Her class schedule is convenient and I’ve met a great community.

I’ve been taking jazz classes with Alvon, and I can’t recommend him and this dance company enough! Alvon is absolutely brilliant—his passion for jazz and deep knowledge of its history add so much depth to every class. He doesn’t just teach the movements; he also connects them to their cultural roots, making the learning experience incredibly inspiring and enriching. What truly sets Alvon apart is his thoughtful approach to teaching. He even provides us with links to resources that supplement our learning outside of class, which has been such a helpful and impactful addition. These materials have deepened my understanding of jazz and helped me grow as a dancer. What I love most is that this doesn’t just feel like a dance class—it feels like a supportive community. The environment is warm, encouraging, and full of positive energy, where everyone is uplifted to grow and thrive together. I always leave class feeling motivated, challenged, and connected to this beautiful art form. If you’re looking for a place to learn, grow, and truly appreciate the history and technique behind dance, this is it!

There is no feeling like completing an Art of VIII ballet class, having been pushed, challenged and supported. All levels will thrive here, but for adult beginners especially, this is absolutely the studio to attend. I did not dance growing up, so starting the journey to learn “from scratch” as an adult with no muscle memory, training or skill was incredibly intimidating. Finding Janicka Arthur and Art of VIII was an enormous blessing! This is where you will find both patience and technique. You will be taught the basics and then build on them. It’s hard, and it’s humbling. But this is the safe space to learn, try, push yourself, and become a DANCER. It’s never too late!

I am currently in the Ballet Series 1 class and I have loved every moment of it! I have no prior dance experience (not a graceful moving bone in my body), so jumping into something so foreign was nerve wrecking for me. Janicka has been nothing but supportive throughout! She takes the time to give thoughtful corrections in class along with providing encouragement, which helps me to correct my mistakes without feeling guilty or being too hard on myself. Since taking this class, I feel more confident, connected within my body, and I feel so much stronger! There are also many options of classes to choose from, providing lots of variety! I highly highly highly recommend Art of VIII School of Dance to anyone thinking about taking ballet classes or any class they have to offer!
