Top-Notch Guiding on One of Illinois’ Most Beautiful Rivers I’ve fished with Will Winans of Big River Fly Fishing several times over the past few years, and every trip has been a fantastic experience. Will is an outstanding guide—knowledgeable, easygoing, and always focused on making sure you have a great day on the water. He knows the Kankakee River inside and out, and it shows. The river itself is absolutely stunning—clear, teeming, and full of character. Every float feels like a peaceful escape, with plenty of opportunities to hook into some quality smallmouth bass. What I really appreciate about Will is his thoughtful approach. He’s respectful of the river and the fishery, and it’s clear he wants to see it thrive for years to come. That mindset adds a lot of value to the experience. I’ve learned something new every time we’ve fished together, and I always leave the river feeling refreshed and inspired. It’s the kind of experience that sticks with you long after the day is done. If you’re looking for a guide who consistently delivers great fishing, great company, and a deep appreciation for the water he works on, I highly recommend Big River Fly Fishing.

Had an awesome day on the river with Will. I've never been fly fishing before, but Captain Will was great at teaching and after about an hour I was getting the hang of it. Absolutely addicting - caught lots and enjoyed an incredibly peaceful day on the water. Great if you are downtown as it's only an hour from Chicago - good for families, friends, or business. Very knowledgeable and cares deeply for the river and his clients. Will be going back again soon!

My brother and I had a great time fishing with Will! We made memories that’ll last our lifetime. Started out fly fishing (we are new beginners) and Will gave us lessons for about 2 hours. He is obviously very knowledgeable, and was so patient with us. But we have miles to go before we could reliably do this🎣. So we switched to spinning gear and began to catch fish. It was a “quality over quantity” kind of fall day. But with advise from Will, we both boated personal best fish from the Kankakee River. Terrific action, beautiful scenery, and wise guidance made for an awesome and completely satisfying day on the water.

Will was an excellent guide. He took us on a tour of the Kankakee river after another guide canceled on us last minute. I’m glad they canceled because Will has to be one of the best fly fishing guides in the Chicagoland area. He kept the whole trip going with his great attitude, a great understanding of the river, and the surrounding wildlife. It was 90+ degrees and he still delivered big time. We landed tons of fish. His gear was excellent and his fishing tips/lessons were right on point. If you get a chance and you’re in Chicago, go fish with Will. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
