This review is for the chess area. My son is 6. He just got into chess about 3 months ago. When we were walking through the park, he saw a chess tournament in progress and wanted to watch. While we were watching, the manager of Bryant Park happened to come by and chatted with us for a few minutes. We told him it was our son that asked us to stop.He asked us to wait for a minute while he spoke with one of the guys playing. He came back over, introduced us to Gregg (who also works the chess area), and said that Gregg agreed to give our son a lesson in chess. He taught him/played with him for 1.5 hours. ❤️ In the words of my son, "It's unexpected when somebody does something so nice for no reason at all." These guys are all gems!

This review is specifically about the chess corner, which is located on the other side of the park, next to the ping pong table and the reading room. My chess experience in this park was amazing. I met several friendly chess players and enjoyed a couple of nice games. I also enjoyed watching the regulars play (really well!). No money was involved. Some players bring their own chess sets and clocks but there's also an attendant with material. A large chess piece on a stick at the table indicates the level, ranging from novice to expert. I first thought there was some system for matching players across the tables but that wasn't the case: you simply report to a table and express your interest to play. According to the Bryant Park website, chess is open daily from 11am to 7pm April-October.

The Chess Tables at Bryant Park - as of 2024 next to the Reading Room and Ping Pong tables - is by far the best chess experience in New York City. From April to October 11 am - 7pm, the Bryant Park Foundation provides chess sets and an attendant who oversees games and helps newcomers - but you are welcome to bring your own set (which I do all the time). There is a group of strong regulars who play 3+0 and 5+0 - they are very friendly and open to visitors. I have learned a ton from watching and playing. Occasionally, a titled player (Master) visits, which always draws a crowd. Best of all - unlike Washington Square or Union Square - there is no money involved. Highly recommend, if you love chess and are visiting NYC April - October this is a must not miss stop.

Huge selection of games. While the weather is nice they will continue to be here!

This is a really great idea! You can borrow a game and play with it in the area, and once you are done, you put it back! Games could be a little worn tho due to so many people who use them. It's completely free. I just ask everyone who sees this to have some respect and try not to rip or break anything by mistake since they are used for fun by a lot of people.
