A total gem in the heart of the city—absolutely breathtaking. The Chicago Cultural Center completely blew me away. I stopped in to see the “Waters of the Abyss” exhibit, and let me just say—it was stunning. Ethereal, haunting, intricate, and deeply moving. The textures, the symbolism, the craftsmanship... I felt like I was walking through a portal into myth, memory, and magic. Each piece was layered with meaning, and the space itself invited you to slow down and really take it all in. And then there’s the architecture. 😮 The stained glass domes? INSANE. No photo does them justice. Every room you enter feels like a cathedral of creativity—from the mosaics to the carved stonework to that dreamy staircase moment (yes, I absolutely posed like a goddess ascending into my next era). Best part? It’s free. You just walk right in and get hit with beauty from all angles. If you're in Chicago and you don’t stop in here, you're missing out on one of the city’s most iconic cultural experiences. A must-see for art lovers, architecture nerds, and anyone craving inspiration.

The largest Tiffany dome in the world… what?! 😍 Yes, it’s right here at the Chicago Cultural Center, and it’s absolutely breathtaking. This place is a photographer’s dream and it’s completely free to visit! I love bringing couples here for wedding portraits after their court wedding at the Thompson Center or as a first stop for engagement sessions. Pro tip: there are actually two domes, so don’t forget to explore across the building to find the second one! If you want a quieter experience with fewer tourists in the background, I highly recommend going on a weekday. The architecture, light, and elegance of this space never disappoint.

The dome caused my heart to flutter when I first saw it, iridescent Tiffany fishscale patterns shining in the soft sunlight. This is a library building, and it always will be, though the books are no longer here, having been moved to the newer and less special library building nearby. When Chicago became one of the most financially and commercially successful cities in the United States in the waning years of the nineteenth century, there was a push to build cultural institutions that fit such a city, perhaps best exemplified by the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. These are structures designed to be for the greatest city in the world: there was that degree of ambition and care devoted to them. This building is remarkable for its combination of lavish elegance and high minded literary sophistication: inscribed on the walls are famous quotes from writers around the world, and there is writing in about a dozen different languages near the dome, praising the capacity of literature to connect the artistic heritage of a culture to its present. I was left in trembling awe here not just because of the fairy-like ethereal grace of the dome but because of the ethos a building like this communicates: that the great literature of the past, from all nations, matters is vital and relevant to study in the service of our common humanity, and that it is the common property of all, regardless of class, race, or creed. It is a deeply earnest idealism that is as important to recover as the architectural elegance and thunderous opulence of design that this building conveys.

This ex library - now cultural center is a magnificent place. Enormous spaces, high ceilings and this beautiful mosaic. There are many spaces though that are empty, and could be used for galleries, art showings etc. maybe even art classes. Also, maybe more history about this building and its spaces should be written on the walls. Nevertheless worth having a visit here (it takes maybe 20 min to visit)
