Why Chicago Midway International Airport is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Chicago Midway International Airport is a major commercial airport located just 12 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, Illinois. Covering over one square mile, it serves as a key gateway to the city, especially convenient for travelers heading to Chicago’s south and west sides. Midway is the second-busiest airport in Chicago and Illinois, handling more than 22 million passengers in 2023. The airport is primarily a hub for Southwest Airlines, which operates over 90% of passenger flights here, offering extensive domestic and international routes. The terminal complex, completed in 2001, includes three concourses (A, B, and C) and 43 gates, providing modern amenities designed for a comfortable travel experience. Highlights include a variety of dining options featuring local Chicago cuisine, retail shops, free Wi-Fi, lounge areas, and efficient ground transportation such as the CTA Orange Line connecting travelers directly to downtown Chicago in about 20 minutes. Midway is easily accessible by car, taxi, ride-sharing services, and public transit. With its compact layout, straightforward terminal structure, and continual updates to facilities, Midway offers a more relaxed, accessible alternative to O'Hare International Airport, making it a great place to start or end trips, and convenient for meeting up with friends or family.

Here's what people think of Chicago Midway International Airport

As of recent, Chicago Midway International Airport holds a 3.8-star rating based on 6060 reviews.

User reviews of Chicago Midway International Airport highlight a mixed but generally positive experience. Many travelers appreciate the airport’s efficient and courteous TSA screening process, noting that even during busy periods like Thanksgiving, the security lines move swiftly. The airport benefits from a cleaner atmosphere and improved amenities compared to its past reputation, with compliments given for the ample concessions and well-maintained restrooms. The availability of free Wi-Fi, the absence of loud TVs or intrusive media in the gates areas, and the convenient location connected to downtown Chicago by the CTA Orange Line add to the positive impressions. Positive reviews often mention the friendliness and helpfulness of airport staff, as well as the ease of public transit access. On the other hand, some negative feedback points to the airport's congestion, particularly during peak travel times, and signage that can be confusing for first-time visitors. A few travelers also note that the décor could be improved and that the food selection lacks internationally known brands, which may disappoint some. Overall, despite some challenges with facility layout and internal signage, the general consensus is that Chicago Midway International Airport provides a pleasant and functional airport experience, enhanced by ongoing refurbishment efforts and a strategic location that offers travelers a convenient alternative to the much larger O’Hare Airport.

Today I arrived at concourse B. Signage was very good and readable. The aisle were wide enough for walking and accessibility. I found several shops like Johnston and Murphy, MAC, and Jo Malone as well as several eateries. The local flavor of White Sox eatery and Reilly's Daughter gave a Chicago feel. The central area between concourses B and C offered several Dining options and of course I found Nuts On Clark kiosk with 3 types of popcorn. Accessible mens and women's restrooms most are hands free. Most stalls even if not dedicated accessible have 2 grab bars diaper changers. Free WiFi that take a few minutes to access. Most shops and eateries are accessible with open entry, accessible self order and pick up counters. Several bar height seating areas with accessible tables. No background music in airport and just traveler noise The art work walking out of airport and to parking or public transport pays tribute the city's Soevisl Olympics, Gage park area and several personal glimpses of military service people, with a look at all races and genders

So haven't been here for years but it was ok. Only downside - parking for 8 days we returned to take the shuttle to Lot C and our bus driver dropped us at the front at told us to walk! Thank you Lola- 7 of us with 14 bags? Thankfully Mr Joe Payton pulled up behind us and said he would take us. Thanks Joe! Your the best. You definitely made our night coming in so late not having us to walk. Thank you! Maybe miss Lola will be a bit more courteous to the next guests.

Chicago Midway is an easy to navigate airport. They have many options for restaurants, coffee, and shopping. There’s a large food court with many options as well as a few sit down restaurants. In terminal A is a play area for kids and a memorial for the Battle of Midway. There’s 2 Dunkin’ locations also.

I actually really enjoy flying in and out of Chicago Midway Airport! While I am an O’Hare fan, I really enjoy my visits here and both times I flew out of MDW I was flying down to Florida on Southwest, on a 5am flight in June 2023 (Fort Lauderdale) and March 2025 (Tampa). Both visits were fantastic, TSA is quick and easy, the Dunkin’ Donuts is nice and convenient for where our gate was, it’s a really easy airport to navigate for me! I enjoy my visits and it doesn’t deserve all the dislike it gets!
