Why CHOO SANDO is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Choo Sando is a unique Japanese sandwich business that has carved out a special niche in Austin's diverse culinary scene. Founded by Chef Dong Ho Choo after his extensive experience in local Japanese restaurants, this establishment specializes in authentic Japanese sandos, which are sandwiches made with soft, fluffy milk bread called shokupan. The bread used is crafted by a local bakery, ensuring freshness and quality in every bite. Beyond traditional sandos, Chef Choo injects his creativity with original fillings such as chicken katsu and fruit-based options like strawberry and mango, making the menu varied and appealing to diverse tastes. Choo Sando’s offerings extend into sushi as well, including fresh nigiri and sushi boxes prepared daily in limited quantities to guarantee freshness. This emphasis on freshness and quality, paired with the cozy, grab-and-go style of service, make Choo Sando an ideal spot for meeting up with friends or grabbing a quick yet satisfying meal. Whether one is craving something traditional or seeking innovative Japanese flavors, Choo Sando provides a warm, authentic experience rooted in joy and culinary craftsmanship.

Here's what people think of CHOO SANDO

As of recent, CHOO SANDO holds a 4.7-star rating based on 305 reviews.

Customer reviews of Choo Sando consistently highlight the exceptional quality of the food and the authentic flavors that transport diners to Japan. Positive feedback often praises the softness and quality of the shokupan bread and the unique, delicious fillings, with particular appreciation for the chicken katsu and fruit sandos. Many reviewers also commend the freshness of sushi offerings, and the thoughtful presentation including house-made soy sauces and pickled sides. The cozy and friendly atmosphere, combined with attentive service, further enhances the dining experience, making it a popular choice for locals and visitors alike. On the other hand, some negative reviews note that the limited daily quantities can make it challenging to find certain menu items late in the day, and a few customers find the price point higher than typical sandwich shops, though the quality often justifies this. A small number mention a desire for a larger dine-in space, as the current grab-and-go model limits on-site seating. Overall, the reviews indicate a strong appreciation for Choo Sando’s authenticity and quality, balanced with some operational limitations inherent to its business model.

This is THE PLACE to go for takeout sushi. The fish tastes as fresh with good flavor. I appreciated the complimentary miso soup and homemade soy sauce too. There's a few tables inside to eat after you grab your food. The prices are also very reasonable for the high quality of the ingredients. Also shout out to this concept where everything is laid out with descriptions and prices so you know exactly what you’re getting. Even better than a menu with photos.

Read a review for this place on r/austinfood so we had to try it. We were blown away!! Excellent variety of boxes. My boyfriend and I tried the soft shelled crab and fatty tuna sandos. He also got the charsu box which he loved and said everything was very tasty and he loved the ikura. The rice was deliciously seasoned too. I got the negi toro and sake box and the sake was my favorite bites. They did something to the salmon, brushed it with seasoning and put some little garnish on top. Whatever it was made it FIRE and standout from salmon nigiri I’ve had at other restaurants. This place delivered Uchi vibes in a much more casual format. Also loved the sauces they offered on the side. To me, it seemed like none of it was straight from a jar—which we noticed and appreciated!! Katsu sauce was so goooood and the mustard was creamy even though it just looked like standard grainy Dijon. The homemade soy sauce was a nice touch too. We also noticed all the picked veggies each had a unique pickled tasted so we appreciated the attention to detail there. We loved it and will be back to try more boxes!

Their various sushi boxes here are so so good and even though I like to sleep in they’re so worth getting up early and being one of the first to pick up their very well prepared take out sushi boxes. If you don’t go early then you better be prepared to be left with slim pickings cuz they sell out fast!! Their fish is super fresh and delicious every time. I’ve picked up from them multiple times and they’ve been consistently good every time. Love that they give you fresh wasabi, homemade soy sauce, and miso soup with your sushi take out. It’s all packaged so nicely. Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Although I’ve never dined in before there are a few tables you could use to do so if you choose to. They’ve got Asian beverages for sale too to help quench your thirst. You won’t be disappointed with the sushi here! Their sandos are also delicious with a lot of variety!

Read about this place so we decided to try it- I do wish we'd gotten the sushi as well to try as we only got the sando/ sandwiches. The Soft Shell Crab sando was excellent. I was worried it would be soggy as it is fried but it was not. Excellent pairing with the sauce and the veggies on it and the bread was very good- a little sweet but not too much so. The sushi looked so good - will be back to try that. The sandos are fairly large portions so we only got those. They also have a dessert sando that looked good. More reason to return. They have 3 sauces for your sandos if you need, mine did not need it but nice to have options. There are seats inside as well as a few stools/bar outside. Apparently there is typically a line but I guess we got there at eh right time - very little wait.

Pre-ordered a sample pack and it was ready to go by the stated time. Wonderfully packed and every bite is delicious. They sell out pretty fast when open, barely anything left an hour before close. Small and cozy place to have lunch, just arrive early.
