Love this architectural gem of a venue for performances. Even if you sit in the far back section of the main floor, or the top level balconies, you can still get a great view of the magical performance on stage. I have seen several Joffrey Ballet performances at the Opera House and have never been disappointed- there’s a variety of theatre goes in attendance- some people get super dressed up to the 9s and others wear casual everyday wear. There are lots of stairs to take in between floors but I believe there is an accessible elevator for guests in wheelchairs. My favorite snack they offer is the coffee and tea bar, it’s Intelligense coffee and free refills during intermission. I also find this very walkable from the Blue Line L at Washington stop- only about a 10 min walk! A great outing for going downtown or to catch the ballet.

Caught The Nutcracker show on Christmas Eve and it was amazing. We bought tickets in the mezzanine and the view was pretty clear. The theatre is absolutely beautiful! So glad we were able to get the tickets we wanted.

For many years, the Civic Opera House has been a bastion of culture and entertainment for Chicago. Its facade is recognized by locals and tourists alike, as are its many beloved performances by legendary ballet and opera stars. I had the distinct joy of attending a show of the Joffrey Ballet's "The Nutcracker." And it was nothing short of magical. The opera house itself is impressive, and the staff there was kind, polite, and quick to provide answers to any questions one might have. The acoustics in the opera hall itself were superb, and the rich sounds of Tchaikovsky floated me away on oceans of make-believe. I want to thank the staff of the Civic Opera House and the Joffrey Ballet company for all they do to provide such a wonderful experience to all who walk through the front doors. They are a credit to Chicago, to it's thriving arts and culture and a credit to the legacy of both organizations.

How does the venue's history enhance the meetup experience?

The Civic Opera House’s rich and dramatic history adds depth and uniqueness to any group visit, enriching the experience way beyond the performance itself. Opened in 1929, just days after the stock market crash, it was designed by the famed Chicago architectural firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White as a grand symbol of cultural aspiration and community spirit. The original vision was to create an opera house that was democratic and accessible, supported by a commercial office tower—a novel concept at the time that blends art with everyday urban life. The structure has witnessed Chicago’s evolving cultural landscape, hosting multiple opera companies and, after its renovation, becoming the official home for the Lyric Opera of Chicago since 1954. It also serves as the home stage for the internationally acclaimed Joffrey Ballet. This legacy is palpable throughout the venue, inspiring guests as they walk its halls or take their seats. Knowing the stories behind the building—its origins with Samuel Insull, its survival through economic hardship, and its continued cultural prominence—adds a narrative layer that makes gathering here feel like participating in an ongoing tradition of artistic celebration and resilience.
