I have been a student at the school for over twenty years, taking virtually every course of instruction offered, and have had immeasurable benefit from all of it. Studying with Master Chu was a life-changing experience. The photos show a Traditional Chinese Double-Edge Sword form instruction class with Master Chu in front (I'm in the silver shorts) and a student performance of the T'ai Chi Short Form at our 40th Anniversary Gala (I'm on the right).

I took a course in Nei Kung, sometimes called "Iron Shirt" practice, from Master Chu in July 1997. It was the smoothest, yet most challenging instruction I had received in years. I am 77 now, and play singles or doubles tennis 3 times per week with folks who are up to 50 years younger than myself. The principles I learned from Master Chu have sustained me physically through the years. - Rashid Parker/North Carolina

This place is the real deal. Teachers are experimented and teach authentic Tai Chi, Nei Kung, Chi Kung and other practices. Each student gets individual attention for training and posture correction during classes so you get to work at your own pace. They are very friendly and there’s a very laid back, non-competitive, peaceful vibe. I’ve only been practicing for a couple of months and I am already seeing increased muscle mass, strength and flexibility. Nei Kung was a great revelation. An apparently soft practice but all about internal strength building and health. I highly recommend this school for people of all ages. Ellie.

I studied at Chu Tai Chi for several years and was a witness to the physical transformation of students (including myself) who studied nei kung and Tai Chi. There were people who walked in the door literally unable to touch there tows, but after some time of regular practice became physically fit and limber. Unlike a lot of other Tai Chi schools Chu Tai Chi teaches a complete curriculum which includes meditation, nei kung (a set of intense yoga like exercises), chi kung, weapons forms, and self defense. As far as I know this is one of the last places in the States that teaches real Tai Chi.

What activities does CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan offer that make it ideal for group meetups?

CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan features a broad, thoughtfully designed curriculum that goes beyond standard Tai Chi practice to incorporate multiple disciplines fostered by Grandmaster C.K. Chu himself. The cornerstone of the program is the Yang-style Tai Chi Form, a centuries-old meditative martial art known for its flowing, slow movements that nurture balance and focus. For groups, learning this form together promotes teamwork and synchronicity as participants move in harmony, building a shared sense of accomplishment.

Beyond the Tai Chi Form, the school offers Nei Kung, which translates to “internal work” and focuses on strengthening the body from within. This feature distinguishes CK Chu from many other Tai Chi schools, presenting your group with a chance to develop internal energy and resilience through guided practice. Additionally, Eternal Spring Chi Kung™ is another highlight—a system blending breathing, movement, and meditation designed to rejuvenate the mind and body. Together, these disciplines create a holistic wellness package perfect for groups looking to explore both the physical and spiritual facets of Chinese martial arts.

The school also hosts workshops and classes for meditation and even Street Fighting techniques based on Tai Chi principles. This variety means groups can tailor their meetups to align with shared interests—whether aimed at gentle health practices or more vigorous martial arts training. Importantly, all these activities are designed to be accessible without stringent prerequisites, encouraging inclusivity within your friend group regardless of prior experience.

Why is CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan perfect for group meetups from a social and wellness perspective?

From a social perspective, CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan fosters a welcoming environment where friendship and respect flourish alongside martial arts practice. The school’s rich history and the legacy of Grandmaster C.K. Chu, who taught students personally for over four decades and promoted community through events like traditional Lunar New Year banquets, add cultural depth that invites group bonding beyond physical workouts. Sharing these traditional experiences, and engaging with Taoist philosophies collectively, cultivates a sense of belonging that deepens interpersonal connections during your meetups.

Wellness-wise, practicing Tai Chi in a group amplifies its benefits. The slow, deliberate postures encourage relaxation and stress relief, which is enhanced by the communal energy and support found in group settings. As members of your group encourage each other’s progress and share moments of learning or meditation, the collective experience becomes healing not just physically but emotionally and mentally. The school’s involvement in public health programs for senior centers and parks highlights this emphasis on Tai Chi as a tool for improving quality of life, making it a meaningful place to gather with friends who seek both connection and health.

Moreover, the location itself—situated in dynamic Times Square—offers accessibility and a chance to combine the Tai Chi experience with the vibrant energy of New York City. After practice, groups can continue socializing in nearby cafes or restaurants, making CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan a convenient and enriching social hub for health-conscious gatherings.

What unique martial arts opportunities can your group explore at CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan?

Tai Chi is often mistaken solely as a gentle, meditative practice, but CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan honors its complexity as a formidable martial art. Under Grandmaster C.K. Chu’s tutelage, the school cultivated champion full-contact fighters, demonstrating the powerful fighting applications of Tai Chi principles. Group meetups can delve into these aspects through the school’s specialized fighting classes and Push-Hands sessions—a two-person drill that develops sensitivity, balance, and fighting responsiveness.

Your friends interested in martial arts will appreciate the school’s rich history of competitive success, including accolades in full-contact kung-fu tournaments and recognition from the U.S. Chinese Kuoshu Federation. Training together in fighting applications fosters teamwork, strategic thinking, and physical confidence. Even those more drawn to the martial discipline for self-defense rather than competition will find practical and effective skills to explore in a supportive group environment.

Advanced Weapons Forms are another intriguing component, allowing groups to experience traditional Chinese weapons training rooted in Tai Chi philosophy. This diverse curriculum accommodates a wide spectrum of interests, from health maintenance to martial skill development, making CK Chu an ideal venue for varied group aspirations.

How does CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan accommodate learners of all levels and promote lifelong Tai Chi practice?

One of the school’s most commendable features is its commitment to individualized instruction coupled with a supportive community, ensuring that every participant, regardless of experience or age, can engage meaningfully. Master Chu believed beginners must receive personal attention, allowing students to progress at their own pace without feeling pressured or left behind. This philosophy permeates the school’s teaching approach and is a vital asset for group meetups that include novices and advanced practitioners alike.

The school’s comprehensive curriculum encompassing Tai Chi Form, Nei Kung, Eternal Spring Chi Kung™, and Meditation encourages ongoing learning and diversified practice. By integrating these disciplines, CK Chu allows students to deepen their Tai Chi experience over a lifetime, expanding beyond physical exercise to include internal energy work and mental cultivation. This structure supports groups looking to establish regular meetups focused on sustained health benefits and spiritual growth.

Additionally, CK Chu Tai-Chi Chuan regularly offers free public Tai Chi classes in local parks and community centers, exemplifying their dedication to accessibility and public health.
