Why Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

The Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain, commonly known as Buckingham Fountain, is one of Chicago’s most iconic landmarks and a perfect gathering spot for friends and families seeking both beauty and history. Situated in the heart of Grant Park, this historic fountain impresses visitors with its sheer size—one of the largest fountains in the world—streaming water up to 150 feet in the air in breathtaking displays. Constructed in 1927 as a tribute by philanthropist Kate Sturges Buckingham to her brother Clarence, the fountain’s design is inspired by the grand Latona Fountain at France’s Palace of Versailles, but it is twice as large, symbolizing the grandeur of nearby Lake Michigan.

Beyond its architectural splendor, Buckingham Fountain offers an engaging experience with its meticulously choreographed water shows. From May through October, every hour features a 20-minute daytime water display, while evenings are illuminated with vibrant lights and music synchronized to the cascading water, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for social gatherings. The fountain’s four ornate Art Deco sea horses artistically represent the four states surrounding Lake Michigan—Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin—adding cultural significance to the visual spectacle.

Located conveniently within Grant Park, the fountain is surrounded by other famous attractions such as Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum Campus, making it an ideal hub for a day out in the city. Best of all, visiting the Buckingham Fountain is free of charge, welcoming everyone to enjoy its beauty and ambiance as a tranquil retreat or unforgettable backdrop for memorable moments with friends.

Love this area so beautiful. So many places to walk to nearby. We walked to the Art Institute of Chicago and also to dinner from here. Loved that they had bathrooms here, the had two buildings on both sides of the fountain. Beautiful view looking towards the city and turning around you can see the lake. It did look like there was some food you could buy here too.

Buckingham Fountain is a must-see in Grant Park. The fountain itself is stunning, especially when the water shows are running. Surrounded by city skyline views and Lake Michigan, it’s a great photo spot and a nice place to pause while exploring the area. Best enjoyed in the evening when it’s beautifully lit.

“Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage…” That iconic tune was the first thing that came to mind as we stood before Buckingham Fountain; a landmark that’s as cinematic as it is serene. Photos don’t quite prepare you for how large it is. Tucked right next to Lake Michigan and surrounded by skyline views, it’s the kind of place that makes you pause. To breathe. To wish. To hold hands. To just be. The breeze off the lake, the warmth of the sun and the soft mist from the fountain create a moment that’s hard to put into words but easy to hold onto. Whether you’re snapping photos, making quiet wishes, or simply watching the water arc into the sky, there’s something peaceful about it. A perfect place for reflection, romance and a little magic under the Chicago sky. I suggest packing a picnic and let the afternoon drift by.

There are also walking and cycling trails around the area, so it's a great place to enjoy the outdoors. The fountain is beautiful and definitely worth a visit. However, the large number of tourist bicycles takes away from its charm. Many riders are rude, don’t respect pedestrians, and ride with loud music and bright lights that ruin almost every photo — you really have to work hard to get a good shot. I believe the city should take action to prevent them from getting so close to the fountain. They can and should work, but not at the expense of the experience for those visiting this landmark.
