A few comments suggest that while the food is pleasant, it does not particularly stand out compared to other high-end venues. Whether one’s looking to get those perfect Instagrammable city skylines or a drink with friends or colleagues under the sun, rooftop bars are a warm-weather must in Gotham. They are popular. So don’t expect a quiet, intimate evening. The crowds can sometimes take away from the relaxing vibe, but hey, it’s New York, and there’s always something to look at. Located on the 40th floor inside the Aliz Hotel, my company hosted a milestone celebrating 30 years in the US and 20 years in the UK at Dear Irving On Hudson yesterday. Reservation is highly recommended. Upon arrival by elevator, guests were treated with a glass of champagne in a small, lively, and welcoming 007-themed interior with classy speakeasy-style lounge chairs and couches. A selected menu with choices of unique cocktails, beer, wine, and other mixed drinks were offered as well as trays of appetizers, i.e., Chicken Empanadas, Sliders, Tuna, and Falafel Balls being passed around by the staff. We also had catered food consisting of Filet Mignon, Salmon and Pasta. For entertainment, Dan played magic on the guitar and set up photo booth to make this event memorable. The two small outdoor balconies with some seating provided a panoramic view of the surrounding cityscape, deemed breathtaking, of the Empire State Building, One World Trade, Hudson Yards, the Chrysler Building, the Statue of Liberty, and a gorgeous sunset. Huge thank you to the staff at Dear Irving On Hudson, especially Edwin, Stafford, and Lisa, for making our experience enjoyable. As first-timers, all boxes were checked with the view, the ambiance, the drinks, and the bites, which we could recommend.

The design cleverly balances private conversation zones with more open social areas, so your group can find its ideal atmosphere whether you want to chat quietly or mingle more widely. The rooftop’s large outdoor terraces offer fresh air and views that extend beyond the cityscape, providing a stunning backdrop for pictures and socializing. Indoors, the lively but elegant ambiance is complemented by retro-futuristic accents and plush furnishings, giving each corner a distinctive vibe. This thoughtful variety means your group can move, mix, and match spaces as you like throughout the night. The bar’s sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere encourages lingering and lively interaction, avoiding the rushed feel of more commercial venues. Whether celebrating a birthday, hosting a reunion, or simply catching up, Dear Irving on Hudson provides an environment where friendship blooms naturally amid the glamour of New York City.

What activities does Dear Irving on Hudson offer that enhance group enjoyment? Naturally, drinking first-rate cocktails is the centerpiece. The bar director, Meaghan Dorman, curates a creative cocktail menu that includes original concoctions like the New York-themed “Ode to The Empire State,” as well as classic favorites with a twist. The bartenders’ expertise extends to “bartender’s choice” drinks tailored to your group’s flavor preferences, which is perfect for adventurous friends eager to try something new. Pairing cocktails with small, eclectic plates such as lobster guacamole or steak au poivre allows your group to share and savor a range of tastes, making the experience interactive and communal. Beyond eating and drinking, the rooftop’s main attraction is of course the sweeping 360-degree views of Manhattan, including landmarks like the Empire State Building whose nightly light shows spark conversation and communal wonder. Many guests enjoy the photo opportunities from both the open terraces and panoramic windows, capturing memories that last beyond the evening. The venue’s artful ‘time travel’ theme—evoking 1960s sophistication mixed with retrofuturism—adds an immersive element that feels like stepping into a stylish movie set, perfect for group selfies and an elevated vibe. Together, these experiences create a lively, multi-dimensional outing that appeals to diverse interests and keeps everyone engaged.

How does the service and atmosphere contribute to a great meetup experience? Guests consistently highlight the warm welcome received upon arrival, starting with attentive hosts who manage seating efficiently and courteously. While some reviews note occasional slow service during busy times, many commend the staff’s friendly and knowledgeable approach to drink recommendations and the general vibe. The setting encourages a mix of lively energy and refinement, which is enhanced by smart casual to elegant dress codes that elevate the mood and encourage guests to embrace the night fully. The bar’s interior design offers distinct zones, some featuring plush chairs arranged like sophisticated living rooms, others with bar seating ideal for lively banter. The rooftop’s temperature-controlled spaces help make the venue comfortable year-round, while open-air areas offer fresh air and skyline views on warmer nights. This balance enables groups to tailor their experience, moving between energetic and relaxed atmospheres. Additionally, the venue is ideal for a variety of occasions—from casual friend gatherings to romantic mini-reunions within the group—as each seating “station” creates a semi-private bubble, allowing groups to feel like they have their own intimate world high above Times Square.

Why should groups book in advance and what should they expect when arriving? Though reservations aren’t mandatory, they are strongly recommended to secure the best seating, especially for larger parties eager to claim prime spots. Booking ahead helps avoid waits and ensures your group enjoys uninterrupted time together without last-minute stress. Upon arrival, your group can expect a polished reception experience, often starting with a welcome near the bar if the table is not immediately ready. This is a natural moment to order a round of cocktails and soak up the bar’s atmosphere. The staff aim to accommodate requests for seating adjustments where possible, making the experience smooth and personal. The venue’s policy of an age minimum of 21 and smart casual dress code means groups should come prepared to embrace the elevated vibe. Once seated, you can expect top-notch beverages and a sharing-friendly food menu designed to complement your drinks. The venue’s layout and service model encourage lingering, so groups can enjoy multiple courses and beverages in a relaxed rhythm, making the evening feel unhurried and special. For groups planning special celebrations, the staff are generally accommodating to custom requests, adding a layer of personalized service that elevates the event.

What unique qualities differentiate Dear Irving on Hudson from other NYC rooftop bars? The “time travel” décor theme, inspired in part by 1960s James Bond films and Art Deco elegance, creates a unique visual identity that elevates the mood beyond a typical night out. The cocktail menu’s emphasis on New York-made spirits and seasonal ingredients showcases local craftsmanship and creativity, providing guests with drinks they can’t easily replicate elsewhere. The dual indoor and outdoor options offer flexibility and comfort without compromising the spectacular views, a rare combination at high-rise venues. Moreover, its location atop the Aliz Hotel near Times Square means it is easily accessible yet offers a refuge from the chaos below. These elements combine to create a rare city perch where sophistication, story, and social energy coexist, ideal for groups seeking a distinctive, memorable night out.

Sharing plates encourage interaction and conversation as friends pass dishes around, helping create a communal dining atmosphere. The menu’s variety supports accommodating different dietary preferences within a group, making the experience inclusive. Paired with the cocktail program, the food offers a well-rounded experience—one that balances indulgence with approachability, ensuring everyone has something to enjoy without overwhelming the primary focus on drinks and views.
