You know in the film, Rataoutie when the critic gets a flash back to his childhood. This is what I felt here !! It's a real phenomenon. As a 2nd generation Mexican who moved to Austin four months ago from LA. I took my first bite and was reminded of my Mother and family's cooking and childhood food. I wanted to cry! A Homie bite! A local recommended this place! I love Austins food scene but this place is truly a gem. If you're looking for a true Mexican, authentic, cultural experience! Come here !! Ask about their Lunch special. And say Joey Ramos sent you here. Truly is El Secreto de Abuela! To top it off ...service was extremely fast. There was a lunch crowd here and they were still able to serve me within 5min !!!

This is a four-star simply because I got the pork chops and they were a little dry and tough. The pork chops were well seasoned as well as the rice and beans. I've been here several times, and would go back again. It is a simple but nice place.

I had been to the other location once and it had been a good experience. Today, I visited the original location with my adult kids and three friends visiting from Germany. Like the other location, the simple and forgettable exterior belies a terrific gem of a restaurant. The service (by Jocelyn) was very friendly and prompt and all the orders were correctly handled (even with special requests). The food was terrific, everyone enjoyed it immensely.

Terrible food. I’m Hispanic. Would never come here again. Worst meal I’ve had in a long time. The chips were stale. Chile con queso was average. The only good thing I was the green salsa. It was spicy with good flavor. The cheese enchiladas are bland. The skirt steak tasted old with no seasoning. Not tender. The rice and beans tasted out of a can with no flavor. Also tried barbacoa burrito which was flavorless and tortilla not fully cooked. I tried to add salt, lime, salsa, but food still sucked. The service is fine. Friendly staff. The building is old. Go somewhere else.
