When asking yourself about something to do near me in Phoenix with a group of friends or family, consider
Full Moon Izakaya

Why Full Moon Izakaya is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Full Moon Izakaya, nestled behind a tea shop on Ojai Avenue, offers an authentic and cozy Japanese gastropub experience inspired by traditional izakayas — casual Japanese pubs known for small, tapas-style dishes that pair perfectly with sake, beer, and whisky. Despite its intimate size, with just a few patio tables and limited seating around a beautiful wooden sushi counter framed by a striking blue tiled wall, the restaurant presents a surprisingly extensive menu. Highlights include classic izakaya staples such as yakitori skewers featuring lamb chops, chicken thighs, and beef, as well as comforting fried chicken (karaage), flavorful ramen, and various rice bowls. The sushi here diverges from typical Americanized rolls, focusing instead on simple, impeccably fresh sushi and sashimi that melt in your mouth, such as handrolls overflowing with generous cuts of salmon and yellowtail. Signature dishes like the goma kampachi (amberjack tuna with sesame soy sauce) showcase the kitchen’s skill in delivering both flavor and authenticity. The intimate ambiance combined with meticulously crafted food and drink makes Full Moon Izakaya an exceptional spot for gathering with friends — whether sharing bites under string lights on the patio or savoring well-paired sake and beer alongside grilled skewers at the sushi bar.

As of recent, Full Moon Izakaya holds a 4.4-star rating based on 153 reviews.
User reviews consistently praise Full Moon Izakaya for its high-quality, fresh ingredients and authentic Japanese flavors. Many highlight the exceptional freshness and precise preparation of the sushi and sashimi, especially appreciating the divergence from heavily sauced fusion rolls to pristinely executed, traditional sushi. Positive reviewers emphasize the cozy and intimate atmosphere, with the small dining area and sushi bar fostering a friendly and authentic dining experience. Signature dishes such as the grilled yakitori skewers, goma kampachi, and premium chirashi sushi are frequently recommended. Patrons also enjoy the thoughtful beverage menu pairing sake and Kirin beer with their meals, enhancing the overall izakaya-style experience. On the other hand, some reviews note the limited seating and the small portion sizes of skewers, which may require ordering multiple plates for larger appetites. A few mention that wait times can be long due to the restaurant’s popularity and limited space, and occasional slow service when understaffed. However, these negatives are generally overshadowed by the quality of food and ambiance. In summary, the reviews depict Full Moon Izakaya as a beloved hidden gem in Ojai, celebrated for its authenticity, quality, and intimate experience, making it a must-visit for sushi and izakaya enthusiasts despite minor operational drawbacks.

We are vegetarian, so options are limited and all the items we tasted were good. The portions are very little for the cost except for Ramen. May be small portion sizes are common in Japanese cuisine and this is our first time. Overall, a pleasant experience.

Wow!!! Simply incredible dining experience. The black garlic tonkatsu was out of this world. The eclipse roll was outstanding. A cold Sapporo to top it off. The vibes in this place. The music was spot on. Didn’t understand anything but felt awesome listening to it. I’ll definitely be coming back. Thank you to everyone who offered me such a beautiful experience. Thank you.

A very solid ramen option in Phoenix. Two of the ramens don’t have any pork. It was good food and I would definitely go back.

The non-alcoholic drink special (i.e. the Cherry Blossom) was vibrant, beautiful and delicious! The service was spot on and the food (both noodles and sushi) were fresh and satisfying. Atmosphere with the glowing moon and neon signs made the place shine. A+++!!! Highly recommend as it's one of the best establishments for sushi in the Phoenix area, in my humble opinion. 🍣😎
