Bottom line: Funky Door feels unsanitary/dirty, and management can be rude. The silver lining is the great teachers. If you’ve practiced Bikram anywhere else, Funky Door as a studio is going to be disappointing. I debated writing this review but felt that my experience has been so negative and so different from other yoga studios that it seemed important to share. When I moved to Berkeley, I picked my apartment building to be close to Funky Door because I was so excited to join the community. Over the course of two years, Funky Door management took that excitement and turned it into me feeling unwelcome and unsafe. I have been practicing regularly (1-2 times per week) at Funky Door Berkeley for two years. I’ve practiced Bikram for almost 20 years and have been a regular student and/or a work-study at 6 different studios in that time, so I have a good basis for comparing experiences. I’ll start by saying that most of the teachers at Funky Door are wonderful – particularly Estevan, Ish, Alison, Trey, Lisa, and Chris – and many of the students are kind. That is where the positives end. Most studios that originated as Bikram are peaceful, quiet, and meditative. Funky Door constantly plays loud music (pop, rock, lots of high tempo/lyrics, last time it was Dua Lipa) in the lobby and I can often hear it inside the hot room, especially because the teachers open the windows right into…you guessed it…the lobby. You also hear dogs barking during almost every afternoon class. They also allow those dogs (I’ve seen at least 7 different dogs over 2 years) to hang out for hours in the studio, and I have seen them get into the hot room on multiple occasions (picture attached) – including once where I opened my eyes from final savasana to see a dog licking my water bottle. They run around on the carpet and in the locker rooms where we are required (and I mean required) to walk barefoot. It makes the whole studio feel unsanitary to me. I’ve never been in another studio where I actively worried about having bare feet (which we then touch with our hands during the practice….). I’ve tried to wear my indoor flip flops in the hallway and the women’s locker room where the dogs spend all their time and have been aggressively scolded by Lynn and Ry. On that note, the toughest part for me is the management. Lynn and Ry instantly became rude and combative with me when their front-desk staff made a mistake with a credit card charge (not the first time either – they also charged me in once for someone else’s water/mat purchase and I let it go because I figured, hey, mistakes happen). All I did was call the studio to ask for clarification about a second unexpected charge that I received from Funky Door, and I suddenly found myself on the phone with Lynn, who all but explicitly said that I’m a liar. The staff member who had made the original mistake that resulted in the charge lied to Lynn and Ry to cover up her mistake, although she later apologized to me in private. Lynn and Ry seem aggressive and dismissive of students’ emotional safety, and never acknowledged their part in the issue to me in person, even though I saw both of them at least twice after the incident. I tried to go back for a few weeks and was so uncomfortable that I won’t ever visit Funky Door again. All that to say, some of the teachers are great, but this is the worst Bikram studio I’ve attended in the last twenty years.

Absolutely an amazing place! My wife and I love it here. The community is wonderfully joyous. The teachers are all great. They have an array of classes from the traditional bikram yoga to Pilates to mixed tapes to all kinds of pop ups. A great workout with great people. What could be better!

Yo, this place is fire! No actually, it’s for reals the best combination of well calibrated heat, humidity and fantastic new floors in the studios…. That’s right, plural. Studio(s)! One larger one that can accommodate the super popular and skilled teachers and a smaller more intimate space— both rock amazing lighting and sound. The class offering are diverse with various pilates and yoga modalities and varying lengths of classes, lighting, music, weights etc. The community is welcoming to newbies and will also push seasoned folks to their edge. It’s a vibrant vibe, with friendly folks. But wait, there’s more…. Such attention to detail in the locker rooms, at check-in, new carpets, hosting competitions and teacher trainings, yoga challenges, international yoga adventures, great parking and bike racks. A review wouldn’t be complete without a huge hat tip to Ry the master DJ yoga instructor who makes customs mixtapes that have the room laughing, dancing and jamming to a majestically curated yoga session. Did I mention this place is fire!?!

Disappointed by unprofessional and Unempathetic service at Funky Door Yoga I encountered an unexpected medical issue that prevented me from attending classes at Funky Door Yoga. Upon noticing a charge for next month's unlimited access, I promptly contacted the studio to explain my situation and request a refund. I spoke with an individual named Jeff, who declined my refund request without acknowledging my medical circumstances. His demeanor was unempathetic and unprofessional; I hope our conversation was recorded for quality assurance purposes. During our interaction, Jeff attempted to access my account but was unsuccessful due to security measures I have in place. He mentioned he would send me an email so I could provide a written explanation of my situation, but I never received any correspondence. Consequently, I found the studio's contact information and sent an email detailing my experience. Jeff eventually responded, but despite understanding that I couldn't utilize the service, he still refused to process a refund. Additionally, I had two in person interactions with this individual in the class setting, where Jeff inquired about my nationality. When I mentioned I was from Georgia, he incorrectly associated it with Russia. I respectfully clarified that Georgia and Russia are distinct countries with different languages and alphabets, but he continued to refer to me as Russian, which was both insensitive and inappropriate. Furthermore, I've observed Jeff making comments during class about the challenges of not being able to touch female students for instructional purposes without permission. Such remarks are concerning and reflect a lack of professionalism. While there are several kind and welcoming individuals at this studio, it's disheartening that such behavior is tolerated. Summary: strictly money oriented, unethical, Unempathetic, and unprofessional experience.

The teachers are great - I attend classes from Allison, Marsha and Ish and they are absolutely the best. Great rhythm, clear instructions, loads of encouragement and emphasis on peace and mindfulness. Everyone here is great - it is clean and well maintained. They have my highest recommendation!!
