I live on the beach about 5 houses down from where the tug Kokua ran aground. I have been to the site every day since to look at the water (at the request of the DOE), and to watch the progress of the ship breaking. I have also talked to one of your supervisors who was on the beach yesterday. I must tell you that I have been quite impressed with the response, the work ethic, and the professionalism of your crew. I have watched every day as they have removed the oil and contaminated water and lube oil, keeping the booms in place to help contain the debris and patrolling the waters to make sure nothing gets away. I was told that you will have divers in the water to get whatever sinks to the bottom and will also pick up whatever is left on shore. Watching the excavator operator yesterday and today was amazing. A skillful worker to be sure and very precise in his movements, making sure everything went where it was supposed to. This situation could have turned out a lot worse than it has. I have not seen an oil sheen on the water nor on shore. The workers have been courteous, efficient and professional. I just wanted to let you know that I (and I am sure I speak for my neighbors) appreciate your response and effort with regards to this situation. BZ from this old Boiler Tech, USN 1975-1980.
