In March 2024, I spent 2 weeks in Globe Aware’s Cusco, Peru program. Their coordinator, Rocio, is so capable and such a pleasure to spend time with. There was so much to learn! Together, we arranged to visit 6 local elementary schools, to do Dental Hygiene presentations, share information, and distribute toothbrushes and toothpaste to children who had never had one before! We also engaged with parents, trying to educate them on the causes of baby bottle caries and rampant dental decay. Together, Rocio and I reached hundreds of students all around the mountains surrounding Cusco. If this sounds of interest to you, visit my Instagram page at: @DrewLombardi_DMD to learn more. You do not need a dental degree to contribute in this manner. As an educated American, who has gone to the dentist for years, YOU can also do this and aid the dental health of poor children the world over! And, oh, the places you will go, and the people you will meet!

An Unforgettable, Impactful, and Perfectly Organized Volunteer Experience I cannot speak highly enough about my experience with Globe Aware. From the moment I signed up, it was clear that this is not your average volunteer organization. Every part of the program: from the pre-departure preparation to the daily activities on-site was exceptionally well-organized, thoughtfully structured, and meaningful. What stood out most was how Globe Aware manages to strike the perfect balance between cultural immersion, hands-on service, and respectful partnership with local communities. This is not “voluntourism” — it’s impactful, authentic engagement that makes a real difference. You arrive knowing exactly what to expect, but you leave with so much more: perspective, purpose, and connections that stay with you. The coordinators are not only warm and welcoming, but also deeply knowledgeable and passionate about the communities they serve. Everything from transportation, accommodations, meals, and safety protocols is handled seamlessly. All you have to do is show up ready to contribute and learn. I returned from my Globe Aware program feeling humbled, energized, and incredibly grateful. It’s rare to find a volunteer opportunity that is this well-executed, ethical, and truly life-changing. I would recommend Globe Aware to anyone looking to travel with purpos, whether as an individual, family, or group. The impact is real, and the memories are unforgettable.

Globe Aware has been in operation for a long time. The organization made it through the pandemic for a reason. They run quality programs in so many diverse and interesting places and the work that they do really helps people everywhere they go. I have looked into their projects all over the world and love that they are real, concrete physical projects. From Cuba to South Africa, all over Southeast Asia, Latin America (why they were on my radar in the first place) and more. They really are doing things well and I can’t recommend them strongly enough. They are who we should all strive to emulate in our daily lives and they offer an opportunities for individuals and groups looking to make a difference in this world.

As the local coordinator, I’ve witnessed how Globe Aware volunteers don’t just arrive they immerse. They build homes, plant hope, and uplift communities with every smile and shared moment. In the Philippines, bayanihan is our soul and through Globe Aware, I see it come alive every day. Volunteers leave pieces of their heart here, and in return, they take home memories that shape them forever. This is more than service it’s purpose in action. — With pride and gratitude, your Globe Aware Philippines Coordinator 🇵🇭

What kinds of activities does Globe Aware offer for groups?
Globe Aware programs are centered on volunteer service intertwined with local cultural experiences and engaging leisure activities, making them ideal for group meetups. Typically, groups participate in hands-on service projects such as constructing homes, supporting local schools, working with children in care facilities, or aiding community development initiatives. These activities provide tangible results that the groups can take pride in, as many volunteers witness the lasting difference their efforts make.
Outside of service, Globe Aware ensures that groups have time to explore local attractions, including guided cultural tours, nature hikes, and visits to historical sites. For example, volunteers in Costa Rica’s Orosi Valley might build houses by day and enjoy excursions to waterfalls or coffee plantations by afternoon. In Peru, groups often explore ancient ruins like Machu Picchu or hike Rainbow Mountain while learning about indigenous Quechua culture. The programs emphasize a balanced itinerary ensuring ample group time for both impactful work and shared exploration.

These activities provide enriching, immersive moments that deepen friendships and create shared stories to treasure. This full spectrum of thoughtfully curated activities makes Globe Aware a perfect setting for groups wanting a blend of service, culture, adventure, and connection.

Their programs are designed so that the service projects, though meaningful and often physically engaging, do not consume all the volunteer’s time or energy.
After contributing hard work in the mornings, groups often spend afternoons exploring local culture and natural wonders. For example, groups can enjoy swimming in cenotes in Mexico, visiting vibrant markets, or sampling local snacks while learning about the region’s history from knowledgeable guides. This pacing ensures volunteers remain energized and motivated while creating fun, relaxing moments to bond outside of work.
The inclusion of group meals with local families, cultural workshops, and informal social activities further enhances the fun quotient. These opportunities encourage group conversations, laughter, and shared learning, vital ingredients for a successful meetup.
Moreover, Globe Aware’s coordinators tailor schedules mindful of participants’ ages and interests to optimize the experience. Many volunteer travelers describe their trips as a perfect blend of meaningful impact and memorable enjoyment, which reinforces Globe Aware’s reputation as an ideal destination for group gatherings.
