I was brought to this fish shop as a surprise, since I’m a huge fan of fish in all forms—and wow, what a treat! They had an incredible selection of smoked fish, and honestly, it was the most delicious we've ever had in our lives. There were also shelves with different sauces, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, there was no dried fish at all, which was a bit disappointing. We also tried their fries, but they tasted like they were cooked in old oil and were not salty enough. Still, overall we really enjoyed the visit and would definitely come back. 5 stars!

Hagen's has been a Chicago staple for decades! A wide variety of FRESH seafood options! We've loved the fried shrimp for over 30 years! This photo is of my father, visiting his favorite fish place (Hagen's!) He and his friend used to salmon fish on Lake Michigan and have Hagen's professionally prep and smoke them. SO DELICIOUS!

My husband's family has fond memories of this place. Today, on the way home, we stopped to give it a try. It lives up to their memories of the fried shrimp. It is breaded, not battered. The shrimp are tender and perfectly cooked. We also got 1/2 a pound of smoked whitefish. I'm looking forward to making a salad with it.

Don't sleep on this place. I got their smoked salmon candy and smoked garlic pepper salmon 🤤🤤 I've tried their Smoked Sable, didn't get it on this visit. I mean, it's not cheap but it's worth it. They can fry fresh fish for you and have other menu items which I haven't tried but if these 2 are any indication, it'd say everything there is delicious! Ok, bye

I used to work in this area a lot when I was a kid in the late '70's and through the '80's and I have stopped in for tasty treats a few times. Was in the area today visiting and my daughter took me there because she knows I love places like this and OMG did it bring back memories!! I was so happy to see it didn't even realize that it was the place until I thought it. We ordered warm food for lunch and some fish for dinner and some smoked fish to take home with me. Loved the experience. The food was fantastic and the people were too. I'm so happy that I got reunited with Hagens after all these years and I'm sure that I will be going there every time I visit my daughter for as long as she lives in area. If you love fish and seafood, this place is must.

What unique experiences does Hagen’s Fish Market offer compared to typical restaurants?

Unlike a typical sit-down seafood restaurant, Hagen’s Fish Market provides a distinct experience by blending the traditions of a neighborhood smokehouse with the casual energy of a fish market. Watching the time-honored smoking and frying processes up close adds an educational and engaging element to visits that few other seafood spots offer. The approachable pricing and simple menu focus avoid the sometimes overwhelming complexity of conventional seafood restaurants, focusing instead on flavor and freshness. This unique format encourages groups to bond over a shared tasting adventure, sampling freshly smoked and fried offerings and even picking fish to take home. The place carries a social and historic charm many groups appreciate, making every visit feel like participating in a long-standing Chicago tradition.

How does Hagen’s Fish Market support family-friendly group gatherings?

What should groups keep in mind when planning a meetup at Hagen’s Fish Market?

This might mean bringing picnic blankets, folding chairs, or planning to eat in nearby parks or in their vehicles. Timing visits to avoid peak hours or seasonal rushes (like Lent) can help reduce wait times. It’s a good idea for groups to discuss menu preferences ahead of time since ordering is by weight and type of fish, to make sure everyone’s preferences and dietary restrictions are accommodated. Calling ahead for larger orders can improve service speed. Lastly, given the outdoor style atmosphere, monitoring weather and dressing accordingly will ensure the gathering remains comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. These thoughtful preparations will maximize the unique, casual, and tasty experience that Hagen’s is known for.
