Harlem Meer, located at the northeastern corner of Central Park in Manhattan, is a serene and picturesque destination that provides a perfect gathering place for friends and families. This man-made lake, approximately 11 acres in size with a 0.75-mile circumference, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational activities amidst the urban landscape of New York City. The area surrounding the Meer is lined with benches and lush lawns, ideal for picnics, sunbathing, or simply soaking in the tranquil views of the water and its abundant wildlife, including turtles and geese. One of the highlights for visitors is the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, situated at the head of Harlem Meer, which serves as an environmental discovery center and provides fishing gear rentals, allowing guests to fish in the lake at no cost. This feature makes Harlem Meer particularly attractive for casual anglers and families with children. Additionally, the Discovery Center hosts educational workshops, adding a cultural and learning dimension to the visit. Besides the beautiful views all around the lake, there is music, fishing, running, gardens, a rink, classes, walking, a gift shop, art museum, and lots of people watching. We live coming here every time we visit the city.

The Harlem Meer is a great place for dog lovers. You can bring your dog and let him or her run off leash before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m. provided 1) you are able to control your dog and 2) your dog interacts well with others. There is a wonderful community of dog people at the Meer and lots of places for pups to run around and have fun. The Meer is full of beautiful plants and animals as well. The Meer most always has duck and geese. If you're lucky you'll see an Egret or Heron.
