Why Hidden Valley Natural Tunnel is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Hidden Valley Natural Tunnel is a captivating half-mile loop trail located within South Mountain Park, Phoenix, Arizona, offering an enriching outdoor experience ideal for meetups with friends, families, or solo adventurers. The trail is well known for its unique and picturesque scenery, including clusters of saguaro cacti over a century old, majestic rock formations, and a narrow, naturally-formed rock tunnel called the Natural Tunnel. The trail meanders through a desert landscape framed by enormous boulders, including the famous Fat Man’s Pass—a slender passage barely a foot wide that adds an adventurous element to the hike. The loop’s design allows hikers to start from either end, but many prefer beginning at Fat Man’s Pass for better views and easier navigation. The trail’s moderate length and relatively easy terrain make it accessible for a wide range of ages and fitness levels, supporting a leisurely pace and ample opportunities for socializing or quiet contemplation in nature. Two men visiting Phoenix for a wellness conference asked me for directions. Instead of giving them I took them to see South Mountain. I took them to the stone ramadas and then Natural Tunnel off of National Trail.

The hike here was nice, I had the trail to myself, there were bikes going up and down but it was nice to hike solo. I really enjoyed being here by myself.it was so quiet and serene. This was my first time hiking to the tunnel it took me an hour and ten minutes to get to the fork...I highly recommend you hike this trail and go visit the hidden valley natural tunnel to see how beautiful it really is in person it's one of those "you had to be there" things...it's a good place to escape the sounds of the city to find the quietness of nature. The tunnel is also large enough to walk through without slouching over at all...I am 5'9 and can walk through without touching the top or sides...I hope y'all enjoy my little review and maybe I'll see y'all out there somewhere...have a blessed day...hike safely...

First time on this trail, stats off a little rocky and steep, but gradually gets less rocky and more sandy. The whole loop took me about 2 hrs, i did stop and take several photographs along the way, you have to. The views from up there were amazing. The tunnel itself pretty cool that it naturally formed that way. My only gripe is the trail isn't marked in a few spots and i got off trail a few times but managed to find my way back.

What a treasure in the middle of South Mountain! We took the Pima Wash trail to the outposts then hooked up to the Maricopa national trail to the Hidden Valley trail. This was apr 6.5 miles out and back. Not a beginners hike with rocks and some big steps. WATCH for fast bikers! Once on the national trail expect elevation climb and cool pancake stacked rocks. Totally fascinating! Clean bath stalls, shade and picnic area at this trailhead.

Summer visits may require sun protection and insect repellent as the area can get warm and outdoors exposure is long. If your group includes children or elderly members, planning for the chairlift ride or shorter trail options enhances comfort and safety. Since amenities like food vendors may be limited or seasonal, it’s advisable to bring your own snacks and refreshments for breaks. Parking areas may fill on weekends or holidays, so arriving early can secure spots and give you more time to explore.
