House of Bagels
Why House of Bagels is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
House of Bagels is not just another bakery; it’s a Bay Area institution that’s been turning out authentic New York-style bagels since 1962. Founded by Sid Chassy, a New York native from a family of bakers, House of Bagels brought the classic East Coast recipe—boiled, then baked on stone—to the West Coast, quickly winning over locals who craved that distinctive chewy texture and golden crust[3]. This is more than a place to grab a quick breakfast; it’s a community hub where friends meet over steaming cups of coffee and stacks of freshly baked bagels. Every morning, the bakery hums with activity—patrons lingering over lox cream cheese, sharing laughter, or simply watching the rhythmic ballet of bakers shaping dough by hand. The aroma of bagels fresh from the oven is irresistible, and the extensive selection, including everything from plain to everything to cinnamon raisin, means there’s something for every taste. With 18 retail locations throughout the region, each independently owned but committed to the original family recipe, House of Bagels is a rare gem: a chain that feels local, a business with heart as big as its bagels. The atmosphere is warm and bustling, the service is quick and friendly, and the bagels are consistently made with top-quality ingredients—never frozen. For locals seeking a genuine New York experience or out-of-towners in search of comfort food, House of Bagels is the place to gather, connect, and enjoy one of San Francisco’s most beloved traditions[1][3]. Visitors often remark on the lively lines and the ease of striking up a conversation with others waiting for their order—proving that good food is best enjoyed in good company.

With a stellar 4.6 rating from over 300 reviews, House of Bagels stands out as a beloved local favorite. Regulars and first-time visitors alike praise the authentic New York-style bagels, calling the quality unbeatable in the Bay Area. Many reviews describe the shop as the go-to spot for breakfast and brunch, with special shout-outs to the friendly service, the speed at which lines move even during busy mornings, and the reasonable pricing[2]. Multiple reviewers recall how they stumbled on the shop and made it their daily destination during their time in San Francisco, citing not only the food but the welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere as reasons for their loyalty[2]. Longtime customers appreciate the consistency and freshness, with some noting they’ve been coming for years without a single disappointing visit—a testament to the bakery’s commitment to quality and tradition. Several positive reviews specifically mention the owners’ and staff’s warmth, as well as visible pride in the family recipe and local roots[3]. Negative reviews, though rare, mention occasional issues such as long wait times during peak hours and—for some—bagels that didn’t quite live up to their expectations for an authentic New York taste. Some outlier critiques note cleanliness or general upkeep at certain locations, but these comments are infrequent compared to the overwhelming praise. In summary, House of Bagels enjoys a remarkably positive reputation, with customers returning time and again for the reliable, nostalgic bagels, the sense of community, and the warm service that feels like home. For most, the minor inconveniences are far outweighed by the joy of biting into a bagel that takes them straight back to New York or to mornings spent with friends in the heart of San Francisco[2].

The bagels here are fresh and tasty! I ordered the bacon omelette bagel sandwich and it went down well! It was delicious! It can get a little busy and noisy so be aware of that if you want to sit and eat. Otherwise great little spot! 😎

We picked up a couple bagels and baked goods before our outing this morning. Service was great, the women who helped me were patient and helpful as I decided what to order. Our sandwiches were good, the coffee was great, I loved the different options for brewed coffee. The sitting area was small so we opted to eat in our car.

Got a jalapeno bagel with low-fat plain cream cheese. Bagel was chewy and the amount of schmear was just right. I ordered for pickup and it was ready by the scheduled time! The store itself is relatively small, so I took it to go.

Everyone who works here is so rude! I was trying to order a jalapeño bagel with pesto cream cheese. I ordered from the iPad & have included screenshots. I can admit that I accidentally selected jalapeño cream cheese, because they had it abbreviated as c.c. I don't work here & I don't order bagels every day, so the abbreviation threw me off, but I should've read it more closely. Then there is a page where you select the bagel, & I clicked on "jalapeño bagel" (see photo). A few pages after that I'm on the page that says "Go half-and-half on another spread of your choosing", where I clicked on the box "/Pesto ($0.50)" (see photo). So I should've gotten a jalapeño bagel with 1/2 jalapeño cream cheese & 1/2 pesto. Instead, I got a pesto bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. My friend asked me what I ordered & I told her, & I said I was confused because I wasn't finding any pesto in the cream cheese, but there were crunchy things in the cream cheese. I thought maybe celery? I went to the counter & nicely explained that I think there had been a mistake. Before I could finish my sentence, the worker cut me off & said that she made it how I ordered it. Then an Asian lady chimed in & told me that I made a mistake & ordered pesto bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. She did not try to understand the situation & didn't even try to see what could be done. At that point I was almost half way done with the bagel, so I wasn't expecting a whole new one. I was hoping maybe they could give me some pesto in a little cup so that I could add it in to what was left. I was just so put off with both workers’ lack of customer service & being so rude on top of that. Why do I have to get scolded when I just spent money here?! That's when I decided to check the iPad & re-order the same thing to see if I had ordered incorrectly, or if there was a mistake made somewhere else down the line. I saw that I had indeed selected "jalapeño bagel" & "/Pesto ($0.50)". So I paid an extra 50 cents, didn't get what I ordered, didn't have anyone try to rectify the situation & got scolded on top of that. I went back to the counter, not looking for a fight, but just wanted to explain that there was a mistake made in my order. Really, a sincere "we're sorry about that, what can we do to fix this?" would have been really nice. I politely told the Asian lady that I think a mistake was in fact made & she replied: "so you think I'm wrong?" Wow, aggressive & overly defensive! It's not a big deal to make a mistake. Just do what you can to correct it. I told her: "I think there's an issue in your ordering system that doesn't send the orders over correctly." Then she said: "Come back tomorrow & we give you." What in the world makes you think I would ever want to come back?! What a shameless, greedy money-grabbing way to write somebody off! I told the Asian man that he should come & look at the iPad with me. At this point the Asian lady says a bunch of stuff angrily in Vietnamese. They should want to see that & fix it, right? I shouldn't have to persuade them about this? I had to ask the Asian man 3 times to come over to the iPad so I can show him. The Asian lady made a loud sigh & the Asian man rolled his eyes & sighed before finally coming over to the iPad. I told them that I paid extra for this. The man said: "how much extra you pay?" I replied: "I don't want any money back, but maybe someone could've apologized instead --". At this point the Asian lady cut me off & said "I'm sorry" with a large smirk on her face.

Always enjoy stopping here for fast, fresh, and tasty bagels, shmears, and sandwiches. A grateful shout out today to the proprietor who very generously said we could pay next time when I forgot my wallet, and the very kind and generous woman who simply paid for us right then and there. You both made my day and I look forward to paying it forward.
