Why Italy Workshops is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Italy Workshops offers a truly immersive and authentic way to experience Italy through the lens of photography. Founded by Drake Busath, a professional photographer with deep affection and experience in Italy, the company has specialized in high-quality, small-group photography workshops since 1999. The workshops are designed to encourage personal creativity and growth, with patient and personal instruction that emphasizes developing your own style rather than copying others. Beyond photography, the tours also highlight regional cuisine and wines to enhance the cultural experience. With small class sizes and professional instructors chosen for their kindness and enthusiasm, Italy Workshops is ideal for anyone who wants to improve their photography skills while enjoying a meaningful connection to Italy’s culture and history. Great experience, photos, and learning, would highly recommend and hope to do more! Drake is a fantastic teacher. It was a great way to experience Italy for the first time — with people who know the ins-and-outs. My husband and I learned some great photography and editing tricks (we are both very amateur photographers), ate delicious food, and had fantastic experiences! Truly one of my favorite trips of my life thus far!

What a fantastic adventure with Mauro and Sean in the breathtaking Dolomites of Italy. The careful planning and knowledge of area, unique cultural experiences and expert photographic tutoring made this a memorable photography workshop! This is my third Busath workshop and dreaming of the next adventure! October 1, 2024 What an Adventure! Trains, trains, trains! Private tour with Mauro Riva to experience impressive and scenic trains in Italy and Switzerland. I have traveled several times with Italy Workshops as part of their fantastic photography groups and had such memorable experiences. The UNESCO site Bernina Express Train was a dream trip of mine for some time and thanks to Mauro’s careful organizational skills and spirited planning, the experience was fantastic! The Green Train of the Alps and the Dolomite trains added to the adventure, as well as hiking to Tre Cime di Lavaredo and to Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes for photo opportunities. A visit to Novacella Abbey for a tour of beautiful grounds and wine tasting was a fun and interesting addition to itinerary. What fun, fantastic experiences and divine dolce with Mauro Riva!

My recent experience in the Dolomites with the Venice extension, provided wonderful opportunities to improve my photography skills and to meet wonderful people. Carl and Mauro worked in tandem to provide a great experience for us. Carl’s focus on “what is the hero of the picture” has invited me to rethink how I compose my photos. Mauro’s ongoing efforts arranging for beautiful places to visit, great food and accommodations was amazing, along with his encouragement to see and capture the beauty of Italy. I look forward to another opportunity to participate in a Busath Italy Workshop. Garth Anderson, United States

Wow, wow, and wow!!! This was my husband Michael and my first tour with Italy Workshops and likely won’t be the last. We took the Dolomite fall tour and the Venice Extension. Our leaders were Sean McFarland of Utah and Mauro Riva of Padua/Dolomites. Sean and Mauro both were excellent photographers/guides. Sean helped us all gain more fluency with Lightroom and made everyone at several levels of photo involvement feel comfortable. (Many of us used cell phones and kept up with the tripoded long lens folks!) Wonderful having Mauro, a bilingual and humorous guide from the region. Mauro seemed to have a connection with the weather guy too. Rain predicted the whole week we were in the Dolomites. At the first dinner he left to table to make a “call” and came back and said he found sun two hours West at Secede mountain. He kept doing his logistical magic all week and we had amazing weather and dramatic photos. And at one point when Passo Giau was socked in we drove down hill and pulled off in the most fabulous spot by the side of the road and renamed it “Passo di Mauro con Larici”. (We were on a mission to find the golden larch trees!) My first photo here is Mauro at his new passo! Venice was magical. My first time there. I loved NO CARS! Which meant we walked everywhere… narrow walk ways and streets, over bridge after bridge photographing the gondoliers and old buildings. Drake joined us for the extension and what fun we had… up early to photograph the sunrise at the Accademia Bridge, mid day keeping up with Venice guide Matteo seeing a mask maker and a weaving factory and a gondolier restoration shop and Venice history at every canal, and at sunset catching the Blue Hour (really 5 minutes!) on colorful Burano. (My personal favorite was capturing the laundry hanging everywhere.) Small group tours meant we all got to know and love each other. Although its billed as a landscape tour my focus was often the people-- guests and locals.

Drake and his wonderful team made this one of the best trips I’ve ever been on! Drake is not only an incredibly talented photographer but he is genuinely nice and a lot of fun to be around. He took time each day to give his valuable photography tips not only to the group but also to each person individually as requested. I would have never found the picturesque locations he took us to on my own. Each place was as beautiful and inspiring as the last. Oh and the food… I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much or so well in my life! You don’t need to be a great photographer to appreciate this trip but you will become a better photographer after spending a week with Drake. Thank you for this wonderful experience, can’t wait for the next trip! ADDED: I just returned from my SECOND wonderful trip with Drake! Italy Workshops with Drake Busath are some of the best trips I have been on. Drake is an incredibly talented and helpful photo instructor that takes you to the most photogenic spots in Italy. The Portofino Coast & Cinque Terre are beautiful picturesque areas of Italy. Drake showed us areas we would never find on our own. He knew all the best restaurants, I’ve never eaten so well, so much! Our base hotel in Camogli was one of the nicest hotels at which I have ever stayed. (Attached to this review is a picture of the STUNNING view from my room.) Our fun group was made up of different photographic skill levels but Drake has a knack for bouncing from one to the other offering advice on how to improve their images helping with camera settings, compositions, everything needed to come home with great pictures. It would be hard to not end up a better photographer. This was my second photo trip with Drake, there will definitely be a third!
