The beach has been mostly taken over by campers, so not quite as inviting for a family picnic as it used to be. That said, homeless people have to stay somewhere too and it was very mellow while we were there. We went down to the end closest to Daimler and hung out and played in the sand with our toddler for a while. That end of the beach was fine. Trash was not a big issue--it looked like people had been cleaning up the beach recently. We probably won't be back soon, given other recent reports.

I first came here with a friends and I thought it was very quiet and nice. Yes, there are some homeless people sometimes camping around but I have never felt threaten nor in danger.

This is a great beach to go to if you don't want to be forked with by the law, and you want to put on a little show... yes, there are campers, but they're harmless... they just like to be left alone, for the most part... and they didn't have any problems with me beach combing through the refuse.
