Great spot. Loved talking music and local events and bars and restaurants with Joaquin the bartender. He made me feel welcome and showed me all the best spots in the neighborhood. Can't wait to come back!

I’ve been coming to this bar for years and have always loved the atmosphere and the people here. But I have to be honest — lately, the experience has gone way downhill because of the food truck parked out front. Not only is the food extremely unsanitary (it’s honestly questionable if it should even be serving food), but the behavior coming from that truck is downright disgusting. I’ve witnessed inappropriate and disrespectful interactions, and it casts a really negative light on the entire establishment. It’s hard to enjoy a night out when that kind of environment is just steps away. The bar itself deserves better. I hope the owners take this seriously and do something about the situation before it completely ruins the reputation of a place many of us used to enjoy.

The guy bartender put some cheap clear liquor when I order crown royal then when I asked about it he lied. So if you go here watch what they pour in Your drink. The female bartender with blond hair was cool & helpful.

Used to go years back. Always loved this place and the people who worked there at the time. Not sure how much has changed since 2022 but I want to go back to visit.

I have only gone on Mondays, but it has been a great time. Good music, cheap beer ( $6 beers/shot combo!), and the Front porch still allows dogs too. Lots of tinder dates were happening around us. But not for me... 3 pokestops if you sit in the right area!

Why is Matchbox perfect for group meetups?
Matchbox shines as a group meetup spot for several reasons tied to its atmosphere, size, and service style. Its reputation as “Chicago’s most intimate bar” means that when you come with friends, you’re stepping into a space that encourages interaction—not just among your own party but also with other patrons, which can elevate the spirit of your gathering. The close quarters mean it’s easier to engage with everyone, creating a collective experience rather than isolated conversations. Because it’s a neighborhood bar with a predominantly older crowd (30s and up), it tends to attract guests looking for relaxed, meaningful social experiences rather than fast-paced nightlife, making it great for groups who want to enjoy conversation and laughter without battling a rowdy crowd. Furthermore, the friendly, relaxed atmosphere reported by many patrons makes Matchbox an inclusive and welcoming spot to host family or friends at any time—from casual meetups to special occasions. Its location is also convenient enough to encourage guests to arrive easily by public transit or car, while the spacious interior—though snug—can accommodate groups without feeling cramped.

What is the overall vibe and crowd like at Matchbox?
Matchbox is often described as a classic neighborhood joint that exudes warmth and familiarity, which is a rare find in bustling urban settings where venues sometimes feel generic or impersonal. The crowd tends to be predominantly in their 30s and older, drawn to the calm, conversational environment rather than the typical loud bar scene. This demographic often values connection and quality experiences, making the vibe more about relaxed enjoyment than wild partying. The small size of the bar means patrons are almost inevitably brought into conversation, fostering a sense of community where “everyone knows everyone” or at least someone who knows a friend of theirs. This effect cultivates a few degrees fewer of separation and multiple opportunities to meet interesting people while hanging out with your own group. While some may describe the bar as crowded during peak times, the atmosphere remains friendly and inclusive, making it a wonderful place for groups to feel comfortable and welcome.
