Why Midorie Miami is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Midorie Miami is a distinguished Japanese restaurant located in the heart of Coconut Grove, Miami, renowned for its authentic sushi and donburi dining experience. Established by esteemed restaurateur Álvaro Perez Miranda, who has extensive expertise living in Tokyo and managing Japanese culinary projects, Midorie offers a serene and intimate setting ideal for groups of friends or family seeking quality Japanese food. The restaurant features indoor and outdoor seating for about 22 guests, providing a cozy ambiance enhanced by a unique 400-fish ceramic wall installation by local artist Jaudtani, reflecting the restaurant’s namesake meaning "green" in Japanese. Midorie's menu emphasizes quality and seasonality, bringing fresh, high-grade fish directly from Japan, reinforcing a philosophy that prioritizes quality over quantity. Popular dining options include the Midorie Bowl—a vibrant combination of salmon, tuna, blue crab, and shiitake mushrooms—alongside varied base choices like sushi rice or cha soba noodles. The star offering is the omakase tasting menu, a thoughtfully curated 12-piece nigiri and one maki experience demonstrating traditional Japanese culinary craftsmanship. Midorie also extends its service beyond the restaurant with private omakase dining and catering, accommodating intimate events and larger gatherings with custom menus that highlight authentic flavors and impeccable presentation. This blend of cultural authenticity, artistic ambiance, and culinary excellence makes Midorie a premier destination for those wanting a genuine Japanese meal in a welcoming Miami neighborhood setting.

Here's what people think of Midorie Miami

As of recent, Midorie Miami holds a 4.8-star rating based on 131 reviews.

Reviews for Midorie Miami overwhelmingly commend the restaurant for its exceptional quality and authenticity, earning a high rating of 4.8 out of 5 from over 130 reviews. Patrons frequently praise the freshness and variety of the fish, sourced directly from Japan, which elevates the sushi and donburi dishes to a superior level. Many highlight the omakase experience as a standout, appreciating the curated tasting menu that offers a deep dive into traditional nigiri craftsmanship. Reviewers also admire the intimate and cozy atmosphere, noting the small seating capacity which fosters personalized attention and a warm dining environment. The artistic decor, especially the vibrant ceramic fish wall, often receives positive mention for enhancing the Japanese cultural ambiance. Positive reviewers further appreciate the staff’s hospitality and knowledge, underscoring the feeling of kikubari, or caring, which is central to the dining experience. On the other hand, some of the less favorable reviews mention the limited seating, which can make reservations difficult and result in waiting times. A few customers find the pricing at the higher end, reflecting the quality ingredients and focused service, which might challenge those seeking a more casual meal. Additionally, the restaurant’s focus on a smaller number of guests daily may limit availability during peak times. Overall, however, the consensus is that Midorie delivers excellent value for the authenticity, quality, and service provided, making it a beloved spot for Japanese cuisine aficionados in the Miami area.

The food was great, really loved the spicy tuna sushi, definitely recommend! I liked the wasabi soy sauce given with the bowls as well. Only downside was the seats. The restaurant was full inside and we sat outside, but there were a bunch of mosquitoes biting our legs. Other than that, server was cool and food was great.

Good selection of fish. However, they all tasted the same with slightly different texture. Nigiri was served undressed. Generally, nigiri at the price point would be inclusive of garnishes/special soy sauce/wasabi. Service was attentive and polite. Would recommend not straying away from bowls.

A Memorable Date Night at Midorie My wife and I recently enjoyed a date night at Midorie in Coconut Grove, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The attention we received as diners was truly outstanding—every detail was carefully considered, making us feel valued and well taken care of throughout the evening. One of the highlights of our night was the generosity of the chef, who went above and beyond to ensure that each dish was not only fresh and delicious but also thoughtfully curated. The menu offered a perfect blend of flavors and ingredients, clearly reflecting the chef's dedication to quality. A unique aspect of Midorie that we loved is the ability to bring your own wine or sake without any uncorking fee. This added a personal touch to our evening, allowing us to enjoy our favorite bottle. If you don’t have one on hand, Vinoteca Miami is just two minutes away, making it easy to pick up a great wine or sake before your meal. Overall, our experience at Midorie was unforgettable, and we can’t wait to return. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a special dining experience in Coconut Grove.

Hole in the wall restaurant, the best bowls in South Miami. All the ingredients are fresh. I like the Omakase of nigiri 🍣, any other bowls are excellent for the price. And i do like the eel hand rolled. I take my 4 year old daughter to eat there and she loves it. The staff is young and friendly

Group of friends and I were in town for just the night and looking for a good sushi place. I saw a couple blog posts mention Midorie, and we were so glad we checked it out! I called ahead and while they don't take reservations, they were incredibly helpful and kind in helping us determine when to come to get a table. The outside seating is so cute and everyone was really kind! The food was incredible, our table got a lot to share and ended up ordering more because the Midorie maki roll and salmon were just that good. A hidden gem for sure, but the fresh fish is worth looking for it!

What Makes the Food at Midorie Miami Stand Out for Sharing?

The food at Midorie Miami is crafted with precision and passion, which makes it incredibly well suited for sharing and group enjoyment. One of the most notable features of their menu is the quality of the seafood, flown daily from Japan’s prestigious Toyosu fish market to ensure freshness that’s rarely matched in casual sushi spots. This commitment is evident in dishes like the Midorie Bowl, where a harmonious combination of salmon, tuna, and blue crab meet braised shiitake mushrooms and creamy yuzu avocado purée atop sesame-flecked rice, creating layers of flavor that invite conversation about every bite’s interplay.

Their selection of temaki (hand rolls) is especially popular for groups—to be eaten immediately for their signature crunch—these come with delicately balanced ingredients such as striped bass, scallions, and ginger. They naturally lend themselves to passing around and sharing in moments of culinary delight. Additionally, Midorie offers donburi bowls with flexible bases like sushi rice, soba noodles, or greens, allowing guests with various preferences to find something satisfying. Groups can also dive into the chirashi omakase, a higher-end option featuring an assortment of sashimi and seasoned accompaniments, perfect for trying a bit of everything in a communal spirit.

This focus on freshness, balance, and thoughtful combinations ensures that every dish invites shared discovery and enjoyment. Midorie doesn’t overwhelm with quantity but instead impresses through refined yet approachable plates designed to be savored slowly, ideally in a group setting where tastes and opinions can be exchanged naturally.

How Does the Atmosphere at Midorie Miami Enhance Group Experiences?

The décor is minimalist yet warm, featuring white oak furniture, artful ceramic fish affixed to green walls, and carefully chosen rustic design elements like driftwood arrangements that evoke a peaceful, zen-like mood.

Quietness is an intentional feature—the absence of background music lets conversations flow naturally and encourages diners to focus on the intricate flavors and company rather than noise or distractions. Seating is thoughtfully spaced, offering cozy indoor seats and charming al fresco tables where fresh air and soft natural light enhance the sensory experience. This setup encourages relaxation and bonding, allowing groups to linger comfortably over multiple courses or shared bottles of sake without feeling rushed or crowded.
