The MIT chapel used to be an open community space where anybody could simply walk in, sit, pray if they wanted, or meditate. Unfortunately much like the rest of MIT, it is no longer freely open and only accessible for people with magnetic badges. Of historical and noteworthy importance, the long brick wall outside has served as a beginners climbing wall to some of the most accomplished American alpinists. It is truly regrettable that MIT is now as closed as any standard university, inducing a necessary drop in the creativity of the people who frequent The Institute.

I visited on a Sunday. The rest of campus was busy with lots of tour groups with kids from Asia (India and China) and their parents. So it was a bit hectic. But the MIT chapel was quiet and peaceful. It is interdenominational, but there is a feel that will affect many who believe in a higher power. The architecture just makes one feel a shared was and similarity with others and a motivation to metaphorically and physically look to the heavens.
