Why MJQ Concourse is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

MJQ Concourse stands as a legendary venue in Atlanta’s nightlife, celebrated for its rich history and eclectic atmosphere that draws diverse crowds. Originally opening in 1994 in the basement of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, MJQ quickly became synonymous with indie and underground sounds — including lounge, dub, jungle, acid jazz, retro-soul, and trip-hop — that defined the early ’90s music scene. Thanks to visionary founder George Chang, the club cultivated a unique cultural melting pot where artists, urban intellectuals, club kids, and others mingled. In 1997, MJQ moved into an underground former blues club, transforming it into a pulsating nightclub known as MJQ Concourse. It was characterized by its unassuming street entrance that led patrons down into a dynamic subterranean space, maintaining its reputation as Atlanta’s edgiest dance club. Recently, MJQ relocated to Underground Atlanta, a revitalized historic district that now hosts a variety of entertainment venues, enhancing its accessibility and vibrancy. The venue hosts a range of dance parties like MJQ Wednesdays and MJQ Jams, featuring top Atlanta DJs and celebrating diverse music genres from classic to unique regional sounds. With its inclusive spirit, iconic legacy, and connection to the local culture, MJQ Concourse remains a premier destination to gather with friends for an unforgettable night out in Atlanta.

As of recent, MJQ Concourse holds a 4.2-star rating based on 611 reviews.

Reviewers commonly praise MJQ Concourse for its unique and intimate underground atmosphere, noting the club’s role as a cornerstone of Atlanta’s indie and underground nightlife scenes. Many guests highlight the quality of music, with a mix of hip-hop, Brit-pop, rare grooves, and 90s-2000s dance hits that keep the dance floor energized. The diverse crowd, which includes longtime locals and newcomers, is often described as welcoming and eclectic, making MJQ a place to experience genuine Atlanta nightlife away from mainstream clubs. The dedication to booking local and emerging DJs earns positive remarks, especially for longstanding events like MJQ Wednesdays that showcase the city’s best talent. However, some negative reviews mention the club’s small and dimly lit space, which may not appeal to everyone, and occasional issues with crowding or the venue’s quirks due to its underground location. Some patrons have noted challenges with parking or accessibility given its underground setting. Despite these drawbacks, the overall sentiment remains strongly positive, emphasizing MJQ’s authenticity and its pivotal role in sustaining Atlanta’s vibrant club culture. In conclusion, reviews reflect MJQ Concourse as a beloved institution offering an unparalleled nightlife experience that resonates deeply with its loyal patrons while continuing to attract new audiences with its dynamic events and inclusive vibe.

A lot of the staff are RUDE!!! They ruin the experience with their ATTITUDES! The security lady at the entrance YELLS at people for NO REASON! The security inside is constantly looking for something to complain to you about! The bartenders are stressed out because they do not have barbacks to help them:(

Tried the new MJQ location for the first time last night. I freakin’ loved it! The layout of the place is so cool. Multiple rooms and levels to dance in with different music. So many bars to get drinks. I didn’t have to wait for anything. They decorated the place great. Parking was super easy in the parking deck for $15 then just follow the signs. Purchase tickets days in advance or you will have to stand in a long line. I purchased mine on a Monday for a Saturday visit. Coat check is available for $5. Staff was very friendly and pointed me in the right direction for everything. I can’t wait to go back! Recommended!!

This new location is really nice, the air feels better here than the old MJQ! I love the set up and design, the bars everywhere, the way the bathrooms are set up. A huge upgrade, cheers to many more years of MJQ!! I don’t come here often but it is an Atlanta staple and I hope it gets its flowers for keeping its doors open for so long!! And i hope the workers make lots of money cuz running a place that big cannot be easy 😭🙏

Security guard was SO rude to me and my entire group. It was my 21st and I had obviously never been there before, so it was very off-putting for her to basically call me stupid for apparently standing too far away (just following exactly what the person in front of me did) and when I asked her a simple question about getting back the things I couldn't take inside. My friends also had bad experiences with several other staff members. Not sure why people would work in a loud, hot environment with drunk people if they are so irritable! Overall, okay experience, but definitely not worth returning.

Nice vibe/aesthetics with good music, but poor management & service. After my first experience where I was denied entry, it was really disheartening to see others be admitted for the same offense, being skipping the line. I understand and can respect this policy, but it’s not 100% enforced as I witnessed several individuals and even large groups (over 7+) skip the line with no pushback last night. From waiting in a line for over 30 minutes, it also sucks to be met with disrespectful security and can ruin what should be a fun night out.
