My goal this year was to venture into more creative hobbies and decided on pottery so I checked out Nola Clay. Started a 12-week intro to wheel class with Michelle at the beginning of the year--her demos were informative and she was very good at explaining different techniques. Even in a full class of ten students, I felt that I always received help when needed. I definitely leveled up my ceramic skills (I was a newbie, never thrown before) and finished the classes with 15 pieces that I am proud about. I took a second course, which was an intermediate porcelain class with the owner, Kelly. I was nervous about my beginning skill level but it was a great experience. We had a smaller class size and I received a lot of hands on help from Kelly. She is also very knowledgeable and doesn't hesitate to show us requested demos. Learned a lot of new techniques and the class helped built upon the skills we learned from the intro class. Clean space and friendly community of potters. I recommend checking it out if you looking for a place to start your new pottery hobby or just to try out the wheel.

For my first time ever working with clay, I really enjoyed the intro to the wheel class I took recently. I truly can’t wait to repeat the same course this fall to better practice the skills I need to continue taking more advanced classes. I highly recommend this spot!

Nola Clay is an amazing place to learn how to make pottery! I took multiple classes with Kelly, whose kind and patient teaching style leaves lots of room for individual exploration while including a wide range of ceramics techniques. Though I haven’t taken classes with the other instructors Will and Michelle, they are both wonderful humans as well, and add to the welcoming-to-all, community-oriented atmosphere of this studio. I appreciate that it’s a smaller space with smaller class sizes: this allows you to get a little more individual attention during classes, in addition to making it easier to get to know the other students.

I was really let down by my recent hand-building class experience. The teacher was late and seemed unprepared, and she mostly focused on helping a couple of students while the rest of us felt a bit neglected. Since it wasn't a large class, I was surprised to see this happening. I was hoping for a more fun, engaging, and createive experience, but was left feeling uninspired and restricted the whole time. We were only given 3 glaze color choices. I didn’t like any of the colors the teacher presented, but she said we had to pick from the given choices. Aside from that, we were forced to engrave the glaze codes/names on the bottom of our pieces. A few students had issues with this, but the teacher said this way it would be easier for her later. In all honesty, it feels like the teacher was more worried about reducing the work she needs to do after we leave than providing a good experience for the students. When I got my glazed pieces back, I was really shocked with the quality of the glazing. I don't feel comfortable using these because I don't think they are 100% food safe. I honestly feel like it was a waste of time and money, now I am going to have to throw away the pieces I spent hours making. Another student told me that the owner teaches classes differently and lets students write the glaze codes on paper instead. I'm so bummed about my experience and wish I took a class with a different instructor.

I’ve done classes and membership at Nola for the past year and a half. The studio is great—on the smaller side, which is great, the community feels very close. There’s a wide variety of skill levels represented, even in the intro classes—some people have never touched clay before, and others have had some prior experience. The classes are always changing so there’s always an opportunity to try something new. The studio is mostly wheel-focused, but there is a growing contingent of handbuilders plus some handbuilding-focused classes, and as an handbuilder myself I’ve never felt out of the loop for not being a wheel user. And I love having a membership so I can come in and work on my own time. I don’t have a bad thing to say about Nola. So deeply grateful to have this studio in my neighborhood. Picture is from my first class at Nola.
