South Mountain is a large, breathtaking, picturesque place in AZ. It's nice that you are able to not only hike on their many trails, but also drive through it, too. You can explore many views overlooking Phoenix, and also enjoy many desert landscapes with endless cacti, and some local wildlife friends!

The parking lot at the actual start of the trail was closed so we had to park at the lodge area which added an additional 3 miles back and forth. The actual hike was very muddy and wet so keep that in mind (we did hike early March). It’s a very short hike that has wonderful views once you hit the mid part of the hike. It was definitely worth the 7 miles we had to hike. However the hike back was brutal. Would recommend trekking poles to ease the pressure on feet because again, it was quite muddy and wet.
