Olson Park

Why Olson Park is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Olson Park was a cherished green haven located in the Avondale community of Chicago, originally built by Walter E. Olson, the owner of Olson Rug Company, beside his factory. Established during the Great Depression, the park provided a unique natural retreat amidst the urban industrial setting of Chicago. It featured a stunning 35-foot waterfall, a serene duck pond, and an elaborate rock garden surrounded by thousands of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annual plants, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Wisconsin’s north woods. This made Olson Park a popular and beloved destination for family outings and community gatherings for decades. Its symbolic opening included a poignant ceremony deeds the park back to Native Americans, acknowledging historical events from a century prior. The park’s blend of lush natural beauty, thoughtful landscaping, and cultural significance made it not only a recreational site but also a meaningful community landmark. Despite its closure in 1971, Olson Park left a lasting legacy as one of Chicago’s most memorable "lost wonders," resonating with those who experienced its tranquil ambiance and scenic attractions. The site’s historical value is further enriched by its proximity to notable local cultural spots such as Jackowo, St. Hyacinth Basilica, and Kosciuszko Park, situating Olson Park in a vibrant social and cultural fabric within Chicago.

Nice park! Dog area is a mud pit after any rain and it would be great to have a large and small dog park instead of just one. The walk is nice except on the back part near the highway where it is very loud. Overall a nice place to have a cookout, play on the playground, or bring a well-behaved dog!

If you can block out the noise from the expressway next to the park, it's a gorgeous bit of land, with tons of flowers for pollinators in the warm months. There's a fenced dog park and walking and mountain bike trails, and a few courts to play ball. The children's playground has great climbers and a generous sand pit (with a digger and a sand table). The pavilion is a great side to rent for parties. Especially kids parties as it's right near the playground. And yes, there are restrooms! I believe they are those composting types. No running water to wash hands but stocked with hand sanitizer. They are generally pretty clean too.

We mostly explored the biking trails. They offer a good amount of climbs and drops but it is meant more for summer riding as the trails get muddy easily.

Decent park with a few benches. There is a dog park there, which appears to be the main attraction
