On May 20, 2025 I had the privilege of attending a preview discussion and behind-the-scenes look at Oregon Ballet Theater's upcoming performance called The OBT Collection, happening from June 5-8. OBT ballet historian Linda Besant gave a rich, personal context to each of the pieces, the dancers, the choreography and its interpretation, while noting that this time, we won't see linear story lines like we saw earlier in the season with their incredible performances of the OBT original ballet "Marilyn" or their stellar production of "Giselle." The OBT Collection will showcase an exhilarating collection of individual, stand-alone pieces, all centered on the theme of human relationships. The OBT studio is easy to get to and has adjacent paid parking in the lot used by The Old Spaghetti Factory for moments when the lot is full. Performances are generally at the Newmark Theatre or like with Giselle, at the Keller Auditorium. For this experience, it was fascinating to be allowed inside the studio right alongside the dancers to watch and listen as they were moved through their parts. There are no amateurs in this company: you will experience awe and excitement at every performance, in every movement. The good news is, their new 2025/2026 season is ready for subscribers!

I am only sharing as a warning for anyone...especially with kids. While they do say non-refundable I find it shocking that they can't accommodate and give a credit for a future show after spending 200 dollars on 2 tickets. I called the day of cause my daughter who is on the spectrum and has been obsessed with ballet got Influenza A. I didn't feel comfortable going with her sick and the customer service rep said I can either transfer to the next day for TEN additional dollars or donate it. I have a single parent income and I would have even settle for some portion of my money back in credits or what not. When they charged me another ten bucks to switch days they put me in the middle when I had an aisle and one seat next to it...I know what would happen if my kids was hacking in between a bunch of people. I am sure the show is great and my daughter was dying to see the Nutcracker but maybe buy tickets the day before cause it just sucks to lose that much money.

I recently saw The Nutcracker at OBT and it was as enchanting as ever. This time I went early and saw Linda Bessant do the Performance Perspectives. Linda shared some of the history of The Nutcracker and described some of what we would see. It really helped me enjoy the show even more. Thank you Linda and thank you OBT.

What a wonderful show. The dancers were so wonderful. They were so expressive and told their stories so well. We saw (Wooden dime) I can not think of a better phrase, but to say, WOW! I was frozen in my seat and felt every movement. My heart was simply soaring with their every step.. Each and every one of them danced to perfection. I've seen many ballets in New york, and honestly, Portland ballets were as exciting and beautiful as being back there again. I will come back here again and again!

I was discouraged to see there was a near complete lack of diversity in the Oregon Ballet Nutcracker. I saw one black actor and she was in a very small not serious roll. Children need to see diversity in these productions studios and roles of high esteem. There exists no reasonable explanation for the 1/100 ratio.
