Any serious golfer would rank this in their top 5 in the world. The creativity and design is unmatched. You could play it 100 times and never have the same putt. The green complexes are extraordinary.

There’s something very nostalgic about this golf course and I love it. It’s easy to get excited about playing a MacKenzie course but once you get there you get a greater appreciation for how this course was built and the inspiration that went into Augusta. He uses the land amazingly and doesn't try and make it terribly difficult for newer golfers, but the greens and bunker positions are what can kill you on this course. But have fun because this is the only golf course that almost makes you feel like you’re in a different time.

It is a beautiful and challenging course. The front 9 probably to warm you up but the back 9 definitely a challenge for every single hole. Tricky and character, you have to plan tour hot before teeing off as you will get into the trap and sand bunker easily. Putting still manageable except on hole 18 par 3, you better put close to the pin as it will easily roll out of green! It was a fun but tired after 18 holes !

Unbelievable afternoon at Pasa. Was fortunate to play Pebble a couple weeks ago and thought it’d never be topped, but then I played here. Great test and my first Mackenzie. Best course I’ve played so far - can’t wait to go back.

What Makes the Golfing Experience at Pasatiempo Stand Out?

To truly appreciate Pasatiempo Golf Course, you need to understand the unique qualities that set it apart from other courses, not just in California, but across the country. The first is its pedigree: designed by Alister MacKenzie—the architect behind Augusta National and Cypress Point—Pasatiempo is one of the few original MacKenzie courses open to the public, making it a rare gem for golf aficionados and casual players alike. The layout is both beautiful and demanding, with rolling fairways, elevated greens, and deep bunkers that require strategy as much as skill. Even from the first tee, perched high above the landscape, you’re greeted with sweeping views that set the stage for a day of awe-inspiring golf.

The course’s routing is another highlight. The front nine plays out toward Monterey Bay, offering ocean vistas that are hard to match, while the back nine retreats into the tranquil, tree-lined hills. This variety ensures that each hole presents something new, both in terms of challenge and scenery. The greens are famously complex, with subtle breaks and contours that have tested generations of golfers—if you can putt well at Pasatiempo, you can putt well anywhere. The course has hosted prestigious amateur and collegiate events, further cementing its reputation as a true championship venue.

But what makes Pasatiempo truly special for groups is the sense of history and tradition that permeates the grounds. Walking the fairways, you follow in the footsteps of legends, from Bobby Jones to modern stars, and the sense of being part of something larger is palpable. The club’s commitment to preserving MacKenzie’s original vision—while updating amenities for modern comfort—means you get the best of both worlds: classic design with contemporary convenience. For a group of friends, this creates a shared experience that’s as much about the stories you’ll tell as the shots you’ll play. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or just there for the fun, Pasatiempo’s course is one you’ll remember, and one that will keep your group talking long after the final putt drops.
