Why Phoenix Coqui is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Phoenix Coqui stands out as a beloved Puerto Rican food destination in Phoenix, Arizona, originally launched as a food truck by Puerto Rican native Juan Alberto Ayala and Phoenix native Alexis Carbajal in 2017. This business is much more than a food truck; it embodies a cultural bridge and community hub for Puerto Rican cuisine enthusiasts. Known for offering traditional Puerto Rican favorites, such as double-fried tostones with garlic mayo, the unique pastelón (a Puerto Rican lasagna with sweet plantains), and their signature Tripleta sandwich—packed with pork, chicken, ham, potato sticks, and garlic mayo on a sweet pan sobao bread—Phoenix Coqui offers a flavorful and authentic experience. The business quickly gained popularity through catering events, community festivals, and a consistent weekend presence, notably at The Rock in the Melrose District. With over 15 years of culinary experience from Juan, the food is crafted with passion and authenticity, delivering a taste that resonates strongly with locals and Puerto Rican food lovers alike. In 2023, Phoenix Coqui expanded into a brick-and-mortar restaurant at 4041 N. 15th Ave, allowing their culinary passion and community spirit to flourish in a permanent space. Their commitment to authenticity, quality, and community-building makes Phoenix Coqui a fantastic place to gather with friends for hearty, comforting meals packed with island flavors.

I ordered to-go from Phoenix Coqui and the staff were super nice. Restaurant is small but clean inside. I ordered a pernil plate and tostones con carne frita. I received huge portions of both for a cheap price. The pernil was slow cooked, smoky, and well-seasoned. I think it was cooked all day! Carne frita wa freshly fried and also well seasoned. So delicious. Tostones reminded me of being on the island; fried plantains are always yummy! I can’t wait to try everything else. If you want to try Puerto Rican food or are from the Island and want a taste in Phoenix, this is the place to go!

Wow wow wow. This place literally made my day. I moved to phoenix a couple of months ago and I just found the best puertorrican food I’ve ate outside of Puerto Rico, EVER. I am a born and raised puertorrican who is VERY VERY judgy about flavors, textures and AUTHENTICITY. This place literally makes you feel like you are back home. The place itself, the environment, the owners, the service offered… I had the Pizza Empanadilla and wow… I can’t even put into words how the first bite felt. After that, I ordered a Mofongo de Pollo with Caldito on the side…. Literally I was about to cry. 😭 One of the owners even brought me some pieces of Carne Frita so I could taste that too. It was beyond what I could’ve imagined. This is literally the best place ever. I can’t wait to go back and visit this place. 100% recommended!!!!!!!!!!! SI ERES BORICUA, ESTE ES TU LUGAR. NO PARE MÁS!!!!!! ❤️‍🩹🇵🇷🥳

If you’re craving a true taste of Puerto Rico in Phoenix, Phoenix Coqui delivers big time! 🌟 The food is absolutely on point — full of flavor, perfectly seasoned, and clearly made with love. The empanadas are next-level (crispy outside, packed inside), and every bite takes me straight back to the island.

I was very disappointed with my meal here. I followed the restaurant on social media and was very excited to try Puerto Rican food during my vacation in Arizona. Service was poor. Waited a while to be acknowledged. I ordered mofongo con pernil. The portion is large. Three people can easily share the platter. No complaints flavor-wise, however the mofongo was too dry. Regarding the ambiance, there was a small child in the dining room with two other women, not sure if they were guests or friends of the owner, but the child had his tablet playing loud videos. I couldn’t wait to finish eating and leave the establishment. All in all, very disappointed. It’s great to see a Puerto Rican restaurant in the desert, but unfortunately this one I do not recommend. UPDATE: Exactly 12 hours after eating here I got sick with food poisoning. Almost missed my flight for having to run to the bathroom to vomit. PROCEEDED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
