Why Pieter Performance Space is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Pieter Performance Space, located in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, is a distinguished arts venue offering an inclusive and accessible environment for dance, performance, healing, and creative exploration. Founded in 2009, Pieter is Black & Queer-led and is deeply committed to uplifting communities traditionally excluded from arts spaces, including BIPOC, Disabled, LGBTQIA+, and Immigrants. The space itself is housed in a historic 1911 brick building featuring a spacious approximately 3000 square foot hardwood ballroom with 20+ foot ceilings and ample natural light, providing an inspiring setting for movement and art. Pieter’s location includes accessibility features such as all-gender restrooms, a non-circulating community library, and an elevator for second-floor access, emphasizing its dedication to accessibility for all bodies. Pieter fosters a rich community of dancers, artists, healers, and activists who engage in classes, workshops, and events focused on body-based practice, cultural cultivation, and communal healing. Their programming is notably inclusive with a no-one-turned-away-for-lack-of-funds policy, promoting reciprocity, generosity, and justice. Formerly hosting a free boutique and subsidized rehearsal/performance spaces, Pieter now operates with a strong virtual presence, extending its reach and commitment to accessibility further. This vibrant, justice-centered community space nurtures creative expression, collective healing, and the conviction that embodiment is a path to liberation.

Here's what people think of Pieter Performance Space

As of recent, Pieter Performance Space holds a 4.5-star rating based on 38 reviews.

Reviewers consistently praise Pieter Performance Space for its welcoming, inclusive atmosphere and beautiful historic studio space characterized by bright natural light, high ceilings, and solid hardwood floors—ideal for dance and performance art. Many users highlight the commitment to accessibility, including all-gender restrooms and mobility accommodations, which creates a safe, respectful environment. Positive reviews emphasize Pieter’s strong focus on community and justice-centered programming that supports marginalized and diverse artists and participants. The no-barrier access approach, including a policy ensuring financial inability does not prevent participation, is frequently noted as a major strength and a reflection of the organization’s genuine values. Conversely, some reviewers mention the transition from the physical studio space to a primarily virtual platform as challenging, reflecting a loss of in-person connection for some community members. A few have noted logistical restrictions tied to the second-floor location and elevator access but acknowledge the organizers' efforts to maintain accessibility. In summary, the feedback depicts Pieter as a vital and nurturing community arts space that successfully combines artistic innovation, social justice, and accessibility, with minor considerations mainly related to spatial logistics and the shift toward virtual programming.

This is an absolutely beautiful space to dance. I came here for a Soul Connection fusion event & loved there was plenty of free parking in a lot around the corner. While I can't fault the high ceilings, it did mean the acoustics of the place was not great for both music & teaching: you strain to hear the subtleties of the music unless you were way up front by the speakers (which I assume were brought by the organizer just for the event) or had to be right next to the lesson facilitator or the echoes would drown out anything that was said (which may have been remedied w a wireless mic?) it did get warm inside on a Sat evening when it was ~75° outside so it could use more direct ventilation (we had all the windows propped open) but I notice this is an issue so many spaces in SoCal where the weather is expected to be mild (60°s) most of the year. I'm giving 5 stars because the space itself is great & there is plenty to work with given how spacious it is.
