Five months in, and I’m happy about signing up. I’d been looking for a good gym since moving to SD, and this place ticked off all of the boxes. Friendly staff, well kept, good locker rooms and sauna, and a great selection of free weights. I personally appreciate all of the squat racks. No big ego’s; everyone is simply there to work out. The price point is higher than surrounding gyms, though you get what you pay for. Further evidenced by the maturity of the members; young and older, everyone I’ve come across is cool.

It’s a nice gym but the way they collect data seems quite shady. They have my info from a previous gym (BXNG Club) and started sending me emails unsolicited. One of my buddies from the other gym had his membership transferred including his payment info which he never authorized. They did not refund him for a false charge of $230. If only their management was doing business ethically, this might’ve been a positive review.

I noticed a charge for $228 on my account from Proteus. When inquiring, they stated it's a membership fee. I am a former BXNG club member and they went bankrupt and abruptly closed. One of the trainers had invited me to check out Proteus and I did for 1 trial class and have not returned. Month(s) later, I receive this charge and management is refusing to reverse the charges and encouraging me to visit their facility. I had and have no plans on visiting the facility at all and there was no consensual agreement between the gym and I. They sent me a screenshot instead of showing that I had opened an email. Just because I opened an email doesn't mean that's an agreement on my end to become a member. They claim that there is a clause in my original BXNG club agreement that allowed them to legally charge me for membership there. I was month to month at BXNG club therefore, I didn't have continuing membership there once they closed. Even if in the clause it states that the membership can continue at a third party, there was no agreement on my end to carry that out. They haven't called me to discuss and only emailed me twice today .

If you are serious about training then this is the facility for you! No ego and no nonsense, just a welcoming place that encourages you and helps you get the best out of yourself. I have been to gyms all around the world (Thailand, Myanmar, UK, Vietnam) and managed a gym myself in Australia; and I can tell you that this gym is one of the best. Ample squat racks to ensure you rarely (if ever) have to wait for equipment. Dumbbells up to 120lbs. Plenty of deadlifting equipment (hex bars, deadlift bar) The inclusion of a turf area indoors which allows for functional training (sled pushes/pulls etc.) is excellent. Also the fact that an outdoor area with a full athletic field is included with your membership is unheard of in San Diego. They also have all the necessary pieces of conditioning equipment: assault bikes (echo variants), rowers, skiers, and a self propelled treadmill (ideal for sprinting). The gym is kept clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. The trainers know their stuff, while being humble and nonjudgmental, the perfect combination for newcomers and veteran lifters alike. The fellow members are great as well, no obnoxious behavior, no tripods with people doing more recording than lifting, just good honest folks giving it 100 percent. Wherever you fall on your fitness journey, whether you’re brand new or have been at it for years, Proteus is the gym for you 💪

I absolutely love the facility, the people, and the amenities. I can always finish my workouts within an hour and fifteen minutes. Each morning is fun when you see all the usuals, and then this gym feels like a second home. Although this place is very friendly, the focus from each member is there. In a sense you feel motivated from seeing other members workout so hard. Update: We love what new ownership has done to revamp this place. More squat racks and the space was reconfigured to utilize the open space more.
