REI is one of my favorite stores. This one in Santa Cruz is the store I shop at every time I'm in the area. The store is big and well organized. They have better separation between different departments than many REI stores. The employees are very helpful and attentive as well. The parking lot at this location has many parking spaces big enough for large pickup trucks.

I don't write reviews, but....there was some weird energy afoot today, and it should be noted. I came to return two pairs of pants and was lectured (chastised?) by the cashier that they could not sell these as new because they saw "spills and animal hair" on them. First of all, the pants have never been worn; tags are on them, and my partner tried them on once and took them off immediately because he didn't care for them. Any stains on them would have come from the store, and the mark the cashier pointed to appeared to be a heat-press burn, the kind of faded straight line that comes from ironing or steaming. We do have animals at home, but they make these great things called lint rollers, right? Takes animal hairs right off. I'd hope they give all returned items a once-over with rollers and disinfectant wipes before putting them back on the floor. I do believe the cashier refunded me the full amount, possibly because I stood there silently and just stared at them. It was an awkward situation, and I leaned into it. I worked for REI (a different location) for 4 years and have over a decade of adventure sports retail experience and was never taught that shaming a customer for returning a new item - or a used item, or even a damaged item - was good customer service. I am confused why this came into their brain as the correct way to handle the situation. Super odd. I was going to buy a new race kit and hydration pack for an ultra this weekend while I was there and decided that I was perfectly fine with the equipment I have and that REI is probably perfectly fine without my $300 I was going to spend there today.

I was looking for a solution to a problem. I explained it to a staff member who remembered me fom a visit 6 months prior and set me up with the best air mattress I've ever experienced. This time I needed a way to attach straps to a hook os some kind to assist carrying my bike up and down stairs.no hooks in the store but he recommended a large carabiner. I tried it on model of my bike in the store and it was perfect. As I was in the check out line he came up and asked me if it worked. Perfect. And thanks for your outstanding service!

Huge new location in Santa Cruz is enthusiastically welcomed here. So good to see our brand new REI. Great selection, friendly staff, and beautiful artwork nods to the local scenery and sights. Robby was right at the front door to greet me on my way in with a beaming smile and warm conversation, showing me around the store and answering all my questions. I am so happy we finally have an REI over here!

Be very aware that REI return policy has completely disappeared as quality of REI products built in CHINA has greatly declined. Bought an REi Kingdom 6 tent a few years back, used 4 times. The inner floor seams have completely disintegrated and the store policy is basically ‘screw-off’ at this point outside of a year. If you do buy from REI DONT buy REI brand! Buy another brand that has their own return policy…see pics…
