I recently visited this REI Co-op outdoor store and needed assistance finding the correct size for an item. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. The store was almost empty, yet the employee named Barrie was unwilling to help and simply told me to go and get help from someone else. Instead, another customer kindly stepped in to help me, and we figured things out together while Barrie just watched from a distance. Instead of enjoying a smooth shopping experience, I found myself having to rely on a fellow shopper rather than staff support. It’s frustrating when employees don’t seem motivated to assist customers. I hope the store can improve their customer service to make shopping more welcoming and efficient.

What’s not to love of this store? They have everything we needed from our Africa safari to our Antarctica adventure. Our winter gears were all top quality, from our water proof warm gloves, insulated pants to our bug repellent and hats, they have it here. Their return policy is almost too good, we know of people returning some of their Antarctica gears after their trip. They could afford a super expensive trip but took advantage of REI’s generous policy. 🙄🙄

REI is a nearly century old co-op for outdoors people. I have been a member for more than 50 years, and being a member gets you dividends, as a co-op, at the end of the year for products that are not on sale. REI has become more corporate and less for hardcore outdoorspeople than it used to be. It’s an unfortunate trend that happens to almost all stores that began selling provisions to very serious outdoor adventures, and REI has followed along the path previously laid by Eddie Bauer, and L.L. Bean, which many people do not remember catered only to serious outdoorspeople. They run trips around the world, and have local classes at the store. Their prices are good, and their return policy is very good, although not as good as it used to be, so you can still buy with Great confidence.

Choice place for all kinds of items for your outdoor activities. They have excellent warm wool socks for winter or mountain activities. All kinds of camping gear, backpacks, tents, and wide selection of hiking boots. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have had a membership for years and it very much helps getting discounts on items purchased.

Biking Viking Of Austin

The email I had to send: "I bought a pair of hoka speedgoats for my nephew at the Downtown Austin store 6/7/25. On 6/8/25 we went for a 3mi jog around the Lake Austin hike and bike trail. By the end of the run the tongue on the left shoe had completely separated at the seams. I decided since we were right there to go and exchange them, as he did love the shoe. As soon as I placed the shoes on the counter the clerk got an attitude that he wasn't exchanging them. Asking "how did you do this?" as if I did something crazy with the shoes other than my nephew putting them on his feet. I explained we just went for a quick run, the tongue fell apart, just wanted to exchange them for another pair. He then began to examine the shoes, then starred at me and said "they're pretty dirty." They had LIGHT trail dust on them. I explained we JUST left the trail and offered to rinse the dust off if needed. He then explained the shoes would need to be cleaned and dry before accepting an exchange. I was in disbelief and quite upset. I've bought my running shoes exclusively from REI for 5years now and never have I experienced such a horrible customer interaction and complete disregard to help. Because of this, I will be exchanging the shoes at another store and have no intention of shopping at REI any further. If this is the new way customers are treated, I want no part. Thank you." I did exchange the shoes at another REI without issue. But because of that persons attitude at the Downtown store. I'm never shopping REI again. That attitude was unacceptable. I can't express the contempt the person portrayed in this review. But if that's who they employ, I'll shop elsewhere.
