Getting more corporate these days. I’m a 25 year member, got the credit card, you name it, but recently had terrible service at the rental department when I couldn’t cancel in advance by phone or by website (website says to call and phone says go to website). When I finally went in person, I was charged a day’s rental fees even though it was before first rental night and I never checked the gear out. Huh? I could buy the gear and return it and not get charged, but trying to do the right thing and get hit with a fee? Also this was a small amount of gear (a pack and a bear can) - not a lot of prep. Old REI wasn’t like this. Sports Basement rentals are cheaper, more friendly, and same day is no problem. After I spend some gift cards, I’m gone for good.

Suzy in the climbing department was a friendly and wonderful guide in my journey to buy new shoes today. I was given thorough advice and all of my questions were answered with expertise. I probably tried on 15 different pairs and finally found ones that I loved with her help. Thanks Suzy!

Jakkar in the bike department gave exceptional service and a super fast and helpful service. Needed a quick cassette change and few other parts fixed before a bike trip. Recommend.

Came here and the only person I was greeted by was the man at the door. Went to the shoe section in hopes of finding a decent pair of walking/running shoes but both the woman and the man at the shoe section NEVER asked if I needed assistance. I saw them help several people before me and some after I had already walked over. I'd hate to think my skin color played a part in their obvious avoidance of me but there weren't too many that looked like me in the store. I even did a test run and walked back over to the shoes to see if someone would help...and of course they didn't. I understand whatever purchase I WOULD have made doesn't affect your check but it definitely affected my desire to ever shop there and possibly any REI again.

There is no reason to read a review of REI. They do their thing and have a standard. If you’ve made it this far and want to know if these in particular are good people who will help with whatever you’re looking for because they care? … Yes. (Maybe a little smaller than some stores, but it’s fine. Everything’s fine.)
