Salt Lick barbecue is fairly run of the mill as Texas barbecue goes, the main appeal of the original Salt Lick was the location on the beautiful drive. So taking Salt Lick barbecue and putting in an airport did not seem like the greatest idea to me. But it beats the hell out of a lot of other airport food, it’s just a bit expensive. And there is a small wine bar where you can get drinks.

I had loved Salt Lick BBQfor years. And was so looking forward to having it again while I traveled back to Texas for a wedding. I was so disappointed. I thought it to go and boarded my plane. It was a sad experience. The chopped meat was so dry and burnt that it was not edible. I tried sending a message with the QR code, but the print was too faint . I sent an email two weeks ago , no response. I paid almost $25 for a Big Red, potato salad and good sesame seed buns!

For an airport barbecue joints, this is not too bad at all. The brisket is great, but not many in. Austin would claim it as a top pick, but the real break spot was the roast turkey. Yes, I am surprised, too. But it was the bright spot on my plate. Also, the brisket egg taco in the carryout bin was also delicious. The sides were the real disappointment. The beans and slaw were “fine“ and weird sloppy mashed potatoes were a mess. Skip those. The beans were the lowest points. Add an excellent glass of Texas wine 🍷

Had a layover at the Austin airport and was pretty excited to see Salt Lick there. I’m a big fan of BBQ and have wanted to try Salt Lick for years but live in Fort Worth. So perfect opportunity. My excitement was dashed after my first bite. Now I will say I was surprised my bill was under $30 for a two meat plate and sides at the airport. Honestly, I would have paid the same amount for Dickies BBQ though. The brisket was very dry and zero flavor. Really….so surprised. The sausage was just meh. So disappointing to try one of the most talked about BBQ places that just didn’t care to season their Q. They put my potato salad on top of the Cole slaw!!!! WHO DOES THAT? Then on top of that the potato salad seriously had ZERO seasonings. I had to dose it heavily with salt and pepper. The Cole slaw was just slightly better. The beans were ok. Nothing super fantastic but just ok. Then the bread was cold and once again NO FLAVOR! My business partner is a huge BBQ fan and owned a BBQ restaurant once and stopped eating his it was so bad. Very disappointing….

I usually get the 3 meat platter whenever I fly here. I would rate they good (4/5) as a normal restaurant, but definitely 5/5 for an airport facility. It is one of two places I would recommend at AUS and I feel it is one of the best options even nationwide considering their price ($25 for a large platter, I fly regularly).
