Highly recommend Santa Cruz Shakespeare! Everyone should try make it to Shakespeare Santa Cruz every year. It brings talent and variations of Shakespearean plays with creative touches and twists. Location is good although nothing close to UCSC Glen. For matinee one needs hat and sunscreen etc. Food stalls are available offer simple yet tasty pretzels, drinks etc with a hefty price tag :)

It’s always worth attending Santa Cruz Shakespeare! The ground and side seating is excellent. Bring a blanket and jacket or gets chilly. People bring their own snacks, wine and beer can be purchased along with coffee and hot chocolate. I prefer a giant bag of popcorn and a few beverages. In true this-theater-is-outside-in-the-woods fashion, in the last performance a barn owl landed hooting on the backdrop. Watching theater under the stars among the trees is magical. Become a patron and get cool seat cushions & your name in the program!

Get thee hence to Santa Cruz Shakespeare in haste! A real gem in the community, just don’t forget your sun hat and water. They aren’t kidding about never having to cancel for rain during the summer season. Sunshades were up but there was still full sun on the sides. The food, drinks, and snacks (popsicles specifically) hit the spot on a warm, family-friendly matinee day (under 6 not allowed ordinarily). The crowd was decidedly older and someone had to be ambulanced for heat stroke, which was handled compassionately and did not stop the show. Restrooms and water fountains available at the entrance. Tickets more affordable for seniors and students. Parking is $5 or free if you drive four or more. Seat cushions available for rent or BYO. Coolers welcome. SCS also supports the schools with a discounted educational show in the fall.

Come enjoy Shakespeare's plays and other theater productions. What better way to enjoy excellent casts than in this lovely redwood grove! (Bring your own cushions and, if you're coming to an evening show, a blanket is probably a good idea, too.)

What makes the theater experience at Santa Cruz Shakespeare unique?
The theatrical experience at Santa Cruz Shakespeare stands out because it combines professional artistry with an intimate outdoor setting steeped in local natural beauty. Rather than a traditional indoor theater, audiences watch performances in an open-air eucalyptus grove, which brings an element of nature’s ambiance—like the scent of eucalyptus and sounds of the surrounding environment—that enhances the sensory experience of the productions. The company's commitment to repertory theater means they often perform multiple plays over a season, sometimes concurrently, which encourages visitors to return for multiple visits with friends or family to explore different Shakespearean stories. They also emphasize dynamic and modern interpretations of classic works, avoiding what they term “museum Shakespeare,” instead presenting the plays with wit, daring, and imagination that connects with contemporary audiences. This fusion of traditional texts and modern directorial approach amid a visually captivating outdoor setting creates an experience that feels both timeless and fresh. The history of the company, which spans over four decades and includes a modern rebirth through community fundraising, adds a layer of significance and pride for locals and visitors alike, deepening the communal bond felt during performances.
How has Santa Cruz Shakespeare evolved to support its community and audience?
Santa Cruz Shakespeare has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability, making it a beloved institution within its community. Originally established in 1981 as Shakespeare Santa Cruz on the UC Santa Cruz campus, the company built a strong reputation for high-quality repertory theater performed both indoors and in a charming outdoor glen. Financial challenges threatened its existence in the late 2000s and again in 2013 when university support was withdrawn. Instead of fading away, passionate company members and community supporters launched an inspired crowdfunding campaign, successfully raising over a million dollars to establish an independent professional company now known as Santa Cruz Shakespeare. This transition reflects the company’s deep roots in local culture and the community’s recognition of its value. Today, Santa Cruz Shakespeare continues to expand its season and offerings, supported by an audience known for its enthusiastic loyalty and robust arts engagement. This evolution showcases a theater company that not only entertains but also inspires communal pride and a sense of ownership among its patrons, making it a thriving cultural hub where groups can feel part of something larger than just a night out.
