Why Sims Library Of Poetry is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Sims Library of Poetry stands as a unique cultural beacon in South Los Angeles, offering a dedicated space for poetry lovers to immerse themselves in the written word. Founded by USC alumnus and poet Hiram Sims, this library emerged from a simple yet powerful idea: to make poetry accessible to students who struggled to find poetry books locally. What began with a suitcase filled with 80 poetry books has blossomed into California's first Black-operated poetry library, now housing nearly 7,000 volumes with a focus on poets of color. The library's welcoming atmosphere invites visitors to read, write, study, perform, and celebrate poetry, fostering community engagement through open mics, workshops, and performances. Located in a former childcare center at 2702 West Florence Avenue, Sims Library serves as both a repository of diverse poetic voices and a creative venue that uplifts marginalized communities. Its thoughtfully curated collection includes works from Black poets, Puerto Rican poets, and local Inglewood poets, alongside thematic collections such as "Eat This Poem," a blend of poetry and recipes. Operating Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and Saturdays from 3 pm to 8 pm, Sims Library of Poetry provides an inspiring and inclusive space where friends and fellow poetry enthusiasts can gather, share, and find solace in the power of verse.

Parking is tight but plenty of FREE parking the street. The Legends who come through there are great. The books 📚 they leave will live on forever. Isaac did his book 📖 singing here on 3/25 and the VIBE was off the chain. Positive folks in one room and throughout they hallways was no joke. This should be a field trip for all L.A.U.S.D. knowledge is power

I've been wanting to go to the only poetry library in California (so I've heard). It's full of great books, some of which are by amazing poets that I have the pleasure of knowing personally. In addition to the books they do regular events featuring live performances. I was lucky enough to be at one of those events tonight. Also, it's in an area that is chronically forgotten and neglected, allowing access to information and art that those local to the area would otherwise not have easy access to. I encourage everyone to stop by, grab a book or enjoy the live music and poetry. I will definitely be back.

It grew from Hiram Sims’s personal passion and decades of work in the Los Angeles poetry scene, which is itself one of the most diverse and active in the country. The library is more than just a place to borrow books; it is a cultural anchor amid a city where many poetry spaces can be fleeting due to gentrification and changing urban landscapes. The library’s deep roots in the Crenshaw District and South L.A. communities foster a sense of belonging and stability that few other venues offer. Its combination of a storefront bookstore, performance space, writing rooms, and community programming creates a multifaceted experience that engages visitors in poetry both as readers and as creators. This integration of space, mission, and community makes Sims Library of Poetry not just unique, but essential for local arts and literature.
