My friend and I experienced one of the worst and most racially discriminatory dining experiences we’ve ever had at SoBe Hookah at Clevelander Sports Bar. We sat at our table for an unreasonably long time without being acknowledged. Other customers who arrived later (and were not people of color) were immediately served ice water — we were given nothing. No one spoke to us or offered menus for a very long time. When we finally placed our order, it was completely wrong. We ordered shrimp with added chicken and fish. There was no chicken, no fish, and only six shrimp. I admit it. A waitress with black hair apologized. Explained. A Black male server rushed over, dropped the food, and left without a word. We had no utensils, and he only brought them after we asked —, and likely not even his job. Later we ordered orange juice. It never arrived. We then asked for the manager, a white male around 60 years old wearing a blue-patterned shirt. His tone was condescending, his body language dismissive, and he said: “I didn’t see anything.” That was his entire response. No apology. No concern. Just arrogance and denial. How disgraceful that someone in a leadership position can witness such clear bias and refuse to acknowledge it. This wasn’t just poor service — this was racially charged neglect. We have submitted a formal complaint to the Florida Civil Rights Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice. What happened to us has had a deep psychological impact, especially on my 25-year-old friend, who experienced nightmares from the trauma. Shame on this place. We will never return, and we strongly advise others — especially people of color — to avoid this business entirely.
