“Going to the store” is not usually something I enjoy doing, but Sports Basement is a delight every time. Really friendly staff (Chris helped set me up as a Basementeer, and it’s cool that some of the proceeds go to local nonprofits), hand drawn signs that are funny and informative to help navigate the store, and a layout that is almost more like an amusement park made up of mini themed worlds. Also I just joined their email list and got my 1st email— this is mundane but since I’m in marketing I really loved the copy and graphics and tone (it was the one about “new bike day” if anybody is reading this lol) It’s one of those rare businesses where I feel good about spending my money there and supporting what they’re doing!

OLD-FASHIONED CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT DEAD! I went to Sports Basement this evening to replace an old pair of New Balance shoes. Due to my profession, I must replace my shoes every 4-6 months. I figured that I'd be in and out in 15 minutes, but I met a tall fountain of knowledge called Brandon. I told him what brand and color I was looking for (they had the brand but not the color) and while he was describing my options, he asked a few questions about my experience in the shoes I came in. His knowledge of how our feet work and the details of each brand were inexhaustible. He measured my feet and even took a look at the wear on my old pair to help inform him of which brands and styles might work best. I would up trying a different brand and bought two pairs. He was informative, patient and extremely knowledgeable. Just the type of professional one expects at a specialty store. One that makes it worth the drive over from Oakland instead of ordering something online. He spent an hour with me and I learned more about my feet and insights on how to better protect them than I ever knew before. This is my 4th or 5th visit to SB and none of the other sales reps even came close. Others clearly lacked even basic knowledge and one guy was largely dismissive. Brandon is a true gem and I hope this company knows it. Any future visits will have to be when he's there.

Fantastic store, been going here for years. Brian did an amazing job heat molding my ski boots and they’re much more comfortable now. Incredible service, abundant rental options at a good price, huge selection, including pre-owned. My fave store in the east bay if I’m being honest. And dog friendly!

Huge store had displays of all the best products for camping and tons of sports equipment new and used. I liked how we can look at the sleeping pads and they had an excellent collection of top name brands. They also had some good clearance sales and the people were friendly and helpful. Would gladly go back again.

I'm not a shopper. I don't appreciate "retail experiences". But Sports Basement has such a warm, inviting feel -- it feels so Berkeley! Shabby couches to sit in while trying on hiking shoes, all housed in a glorious converted ice rink. I was extremely pleased to recently discover that Sports Basement offers adventure trips. I immediately signed up for a backcountry backpacking trip in Yosemite over the July 4th weekend. It turned out great! Great guides, great group of local people showed up, all who booked it through Sports Basement. I believe there were only 9 guests on the trip? Nice size for the group. I'll absolutely be doing a trip with Sports Basement again.
