I discovered Sunken Gardens nearly a year ago while being in the area to view the Sears, Roebuck and Company Complex as well as Nichols Tower which are two national historic landmarks on the west side of Chicago - North Lawndale. Now, if you are familiar with Sunken Gardens then I am sure you are aware of the Sears, Roebuck and Company Complex, as well as the original Sears Tower - Nichols Tower, which stands out upon entering Homan Square. Since my initial visit to Sunken Gardens, I have made it my key out-and-back landmark while running or cycling in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Its design paints a picture of its past which looks unkept in comparison to what it looked like in the early to mid 1900's because it is no longer maintained as it once was, but still has potential to be a beautiful venue for events today. A highlight to Sunken Gardens is a 100-foot long, Doric-styled Pergola, which adds to the beauty of the garden. In the past, the garden featured a lake stocked with goldfish and three fountains. Such features were the perfect change of environment for the employees leaving them refreshed and forgetful of the little annoyances of the morning. Thomas G
