Delicious dessert! The taiyaki were made fresh to order and were filled pretty well. We got ube, red bean, and custard and they were all delicious! The taro milk tea with boba was very good, but a little on the sweet side (we forgot to ask to change the sugar level, so we aren’t sure if they’re able to). I would love to try the ice cream next time we come back.

We got the matcha soft serve in a custard filled taiyaki. The flavors were all really good but we felt the taiyaki could’ve been filled a bit more. But the portion size was great and we really enjoyed the matcha soft serve!

An absolute treat!! Pretty average price for an ice cream cone, but this one’s much quirkier and yummier. I recommend the matcha soft serve w custard filling

Place was empty and it took more than 15 minutes to create a Bear Down, which is apparently chocolate soft serve in a cone full of peanut butter. The PB is not incorporated in the ice cream, it’s literally like half a bottle in the bottom of the cone. It also took them 15 minutes to tell my daughter that the vanilla she ordered wasn’t solid. What we finally got wasn’t worth the wait or the price.

stumbled upon this soft serve place last year and it’s soo good and affordable!! What’s even better is that it’s Dairy Free!! My favorite is their matcha with crushed oreos and my bf is obsessed with their chocolate shake with oreos. We tried the taiyaki but didn’t love the texture but that’s just us (more on the doughy side) but love everything else!!

What is the history and cultural appeal behind Taiyaki?

Taiyaki Chicago honors the rich history of this traditional Japanese dessert, created during the Edo Period in the 1600s. The original taiyaki took the form of a fried fish-shaped pastry filled with red bean paste and symbolized luck and prosperity due to the cultural significance of fish in Japan at the time. The custom to mold treats into a fish shape taps into a deep cultural appreciation for symbolism in food and the joy of street snacks. Taiyaki Chicago continues this legacy by baking its pastries fresh in traditional cast iron molds and adapting the recipes to contemporary tastes with inventive fillings and toppings like soft-serve ice cream. This cultural authenticity combined with modern twists makes the eatery a fascinating place to experience a bit of Japanese culinary history in Chicago. For groups, sharing this cultural story alongside their food enhances the meetup experience, adding depth and conversation beyond the pure enjoyment of taste. The shop truly offers a bridge between tradition and today’s social lifestyle.
