The Creature Conservancy

Why The Creature Conservancy is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
The Creature Conservancy in Ann Arbor, Michigan, offers a unique and meaningful place to meet with friends and family through its immersive wildlife education experience. Established in 2005, sparked by the rescue of an abandoned American alligator named Al, it has grown into a sanctuary home for over 400 individual animals representing roughly 100 species. Many of these animals are rescues or former exotic pets, brought in due to the challenges of private ownership or injuries that make release into the wild impossible. The Conservancy focuses on providing high-quality animal care adhering to the five freedoms of animal welfare, including appropriate nutrition, safe habitats, veterinary care, and behavioral enrichment. Visitors can enjoy close-up encounters with animals such as alligators, sloths, bald eagles, cougars, and warthogs in mostly covered enclosures, making it suitable for all weather conditions. The site is handicap and stroller accessible, with free parking and a gift shop to enhance the visit. Open primarily on weekends for public visits and offering private tours, birthday parties, and educational field trips during weekdays, it blends hands-on learning with conservation efforts. Educational presentations and zookeeper talks enrich the experience, helping guests of all ages understand biology, ecology, and conservation while connecting to the unique stories of individual animals.

Just incredible! So neat to see these animals up close and every volunteer we spoke with was so friendly and knowledgeable. Such a fascinating variety of animals from emu to clouded leopards to alligators. I loved the signs across from the enclosures for many of the animals having information about that specific animal like their favorite foods and baby pictures of them at the conservancy. It was very cute and a fun way to “see” the animals that were hiding out from the heat. A surprising number of the animals were out and about though and we went on a fairly warm summer day. The talks they give are so fun and you can clearly see how much everyone cares about these animals and how much the animals respond to them and how comfortable they are with their keepers. We went as a group of 4 adults and had just as much fun even though there were a decent number of kiddos around. We even got to pet a very sassy sloth and a python. We will 100% be back (likely next month for the next theme of animal talks lol).

Our favorite local animal activity with our toddler and friends! Every visit has a fun surprise, or a new addition, or a seasonal change… which keeps everyone entertained and updated with new education! This is such a gem to have right in Ann Arbor, and I only wish we had gone many years before. The staff is above and beyond helpful and informative. The membership is absolutely worth it because every month you get a different experience! The kid room activities are super cute and we’re always grateful for the TLC to the little visitors.

A tiktok video highlighted this wonderful exhibit and it did not disappoint. Prior to entering, several beautiful, chatty birds greeted me and one even waved. After going inside, I followed the path around and viewed an adorable variety of curious animals. Unlike a standard, large city zoo, some animals were close enough to reach out and touch. A one hour presentation featured a clouded leopard, chameleon, carpet python and sloth. The sloth was brought around the crowd for an up close experience, so that was a real treat! Including the presentation, it's best to allow at least 2 hours (not congested during the time I went) to enjoy the whole experience. I'll definitely return!

It was my first time visiting for First Friday Adult Night and I was impressed with how friendly the staff were. you really feel welcomed. They have animals you can see as you walk through the facility along with detailed information throughout which is a nice touch. I’ll definitely be back and plan to get a membership in the future.

10 stars!! My husband found this place and it's amazing!! Sooo many animals and better than the Zoo because you don't have to walk a ton and the workers are very friendly and personable. There are a lot of things you can look at without paying such as the Tegu (big looking lizard), an Owl, tortoises, parrots, black swans, muskrat, llama, horses, and one other animal. But if you pay for admission, you can enter their buildings that have lots more animals like sloths on the ceiling, a reindeer, an emu, mongoose, warthog, clouded leopards, a cougar, and a 300 pound alligator! There are many animals inside for sure! General admission is $15 and it's considered a day pass which means you can leave and come back (the lady clarified for us). Kids above 2 are $13 and those 2 and under are free! Loved this place and def coming back!
