Why The Poetry Garage is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
The Poetry Garage stands out as a distinctive self-parking facility located at 201 W. Madison at the corner of Madison and Wells in Chicago's Loop. What makes this garage exceptional is its poetic theme—each of its floors is dedicated to a renowned American poet like Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, and others. Visitors are greeted by colorful portraits and poetic excerpts displayed throughout each level and in elevator lobbies, creating an atmosphere that blends functional urban parking with cultural inspiration. Since opening in 1997 and undergoing enhancements including a million-dollar automation upgrade and LED lighting, the facility has embraced advanced technology such as license plate recognition and dynamic rate signage to optimize the parking experience. Its proximity to notable cultural destinations, particularly the Lyric Opera House just a block away, makes it an attractive meeting spot for friends attending events or spending time downtown. The Poetry Garage offers standard Loop parking rates along with specials such as morning and weekend deals, making it an affordable option while delivering an artistic touch uncommon in typical garages. This blend of utility, technology, affordability, and cultural homage crafts a uniquely engaging environment perfect for gatherings or simply adding a little literary charm to your urban commute.

I think this place was worth the price. It is not a tight in terms of space as many of the lots. It was clean and felt safe. I appreciated that it was cashless, so no one was peaking into the pay areas. Just FYI though, it is one of those parking garages were you have to pay attention to the entrace you use. I could not get to my car for the longest time until I went down the elevator and walked back up to my car. Like a double helix situation. lol.

first of all the garage entry does not have the prices listed. I entered the garage to see where the list is by the time I arrived to the exit the prices were listed there. Which took me two minutes from the entryway to the exit and the garage site wanted $21 for this entry and exist. That’s an absolute disaster and highway robbery to know how much it cost to park. So I either pay the $21 for two minutes inside the garage or stay the night and pay the full price. What a deceiving and dishonest business. Hello, I didn’t see any list prices sign even after walking on foot after I left the parking garage and paid the 21 dollars. I also pressed the help button, and the guy told me he could not help me and that I had to pay even after explaining what had happened. So, he failed to let me out even after being in the garage for less than 3 minutes trying to find my way out and explaining the situation. That’s when I saw the list of prices, actually, on the way out. That’s called deceiving the public to get business. And yes, you cannot see the list of prices to park either from Monroe St or Wells St.

Great parking garage! Lots of clear signage, well lit, and lots of security. I also convenient location for the CIBC theater!

Wow! Prices have gone thru the roof in the last 4-months. Totally not worth $25 during the workday. That’s not a special that’s highway robbery. Also the elevators seem like they are going to breakdown at any moment. And the EV charging is basically only for Teslas.

Park here if you don’t want to go home. At this point we may just need to sleep in this car overnight. We have been sitting on level 5, where we parked for over a hour, still in line, moved maybe 50 feet just trying to leave. Also we pre-paid for our ticket on the parking garage’s own website and the QR code was denied at entry, attendant doesn’t know what to do, so we had to pay twice. This place is a nightmare, plenty of other options if you’re going to the lyric opera. Leaving this garage will take longer than the show we saw. Do NOT park here.
