This past weekend was the grand opening of The Portal HQ! I had no idea what this place was when I was taking a trip to Lucky Tree near by and I'm glad I found it! Such a cool place that seems like the physical manifestation of the artist community in Raleigh. The owners are both really genuine guys that just want community and collaboration to be the forefront of the space. Definitely recommend you checking out a show or attending a workshop here!

The only reason The Portal has 5 stars is because they offer you an extra entry on to their spinning wheel for a random shot at the open mic if you give them 5 stars. Even then, your chance of performing any time you are here is extremely low as there are over 50-100 people on the wheel and they only choose about 20 a night maximum. This also was never communicated to me when I made an almost 2 hour trip to perform there AND paid entry for me and my friend who came. I was there from 8pm until 12:30am and by the time the night was over the wheel had maybe 150-200 names on it while only 5-10 people were still at the venue at all. Unprofessionally ran venue in my experience as I’ve never been somewhere that operates like this and if they do I would assume they tell you beforehand instead of leaving you there all night without any help. Hopefully that changes in the future.
