Went here on Saturday to grab a drink and watch some karaoke. We got there early and encountered a comedy open mic. Within 5 minutes of sitting down, the host said "come on comics, just because we have some females in the audience doesn't mean you need to get shy." We left before we could even think about ordering a drink. I love a dive bar, esp one as decked out as this place, but being singled out with demeaning language made us consider never coming here again. Don't go alone if you are a woman or afab.

When we walked in and sat down we weren't expecting open mic night, but a few folks made us laugh. However the host made incredibly off-color remarks/jokes - the first of which was him complaining about the review before mine where he called them "females" again. We decided to give it a few more minutes but left when he got up and remarked about how he needed to "say the n-word a bunch" to cover for a comedian who didnt show up after they were called. We couldn't handle the gross, "edgy" white guy "comedy" from the 90s. Only 2 stars cause I heard karaoke is a much better vibe, so I might come back and give it a shot....but definitely NOT on an open mic night with this host. Will update when there's a better host.

The Shanghai Room, the bar and karaoke side to North Star Diner, is a popular spot on weekends and nights. Parking in this area can be easy a block or two away, so it's not too much of a walk. Inside there is probably 2 to 3 dozen tables with a big bar in the middle and a karaoke stage in the back. Drink and food orders go through the bar, which sometimes can be a bit of a wait, but the bartenders are friendly. The food is alright, big orders of fries are common to share with others. Prices here aren't too bad for drinks. The wait for karaoke is usually over an hour if you get there past 10pm. Overall it's a solid night spot to hang out at
