Why Third Place Books is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Third Place Books is a uniquely inviting independent bookstore that serves as a vibrant community hub in the Seattle area. Founded in 1998 with a vision inspired by sociologist Ray Oldenburg's concept of the "third place" — a communal space distinct from home and work — this bookstore goes beyond simply selling books. The flagship location in Lake Forest Park spans 15,000 square feet and offers a rich mix of new and used books alongside a large Commons area equipped with seating for hundreds, a performance stage, and multiple restaurants. This thoughtfully designed environment encourages visitors to gather, relax, study, attend author readings, live music events, language groups, craft shows, and other free cultural activities. The bookstore has since expanded to include two additional locations in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood and Seward Park, each tailored to reflect its local community's character, featuring amenities like a full-service Mediterranean restaurant or a beer and wine pub. With its welcoming atmosphere, curated book selections, and diverse programming, Third Place Books is an ideal place to meet friends, explore literature, and participate in enriching communal experiences.

This is the exact coffee shop I was looking for one day. A bookstore feel and smell with wood floors and shelves yet a place to drink coffee and get some work done outside of the house. They even have outside seating not to mention parking. The food items were maybe a little limited in the breakfast region, but if you’d like chips, you’ll have a huge variety to choose from. The Wi-Fi is strong and there’s a bathroom in the downstairs area that has more seating. Food starts being served around 11 AM in the form of hamburgers and cheeseburgers.

Walked here on a Sunday. We were just in time for National Indie Bookstore Day and received a little gift with our purchase! This is the cutest bookstore— I was immediately in love. There is a lil cafe/restaurant as well that we didn’t get to try. It was bustling for the time of day. The books are very organized. They have a decent selection, although the Latin American history section needs work. I loved that many shelves have “Staff Picks” recommendations with blurbs as to why they are recommending the book. Other places aren’t as thorough or thoughtful in their recommendations. Lots of cozy places to sit and the staff were all kind and welcoming. If you’re in the area, definitely stop by!

Cozy, cute cafe with great tea options perfect for dining and playing board games in small groups. It has a book store and offers the option to read from the book collection while snacking in the cafe.

It's a beautiful dream come true. Books, coffee, hard cider. We went for breakfast and the sandwiches were a little pricey but very tasty. We had coffee and roamed the shelves. It's a fantastic place that I can't wait to frequent! 🥰🥰

This place truly lives up to its name, being a genuinely fantastic place to spend time and connect with people outside of work or the home. Great diverse book selection. And Chucks has these big tables for board games, good food and beer. One of my favorite places!
