Why USA Shaolin Temple is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

The USA Shaolin Temple is a unique and inspiring hub for practitioners and enthusiasts of Shaolin martial arts and Chan Buddhism, located in New York City with land holdings expanding to Upstate New York. Founded by Shifu Shi Yan Ming in 1994, a true Shaolin monk trained at the original Shaolin Temple in China, this establishment brings an authentic experience of ancient Shaolin traditions into the modern era. It serves as a great place to meet friends who share interests in martial arts, meditation, and Eastern philosophy, fostering a community centered around discipline, wellness, and self-improvement. The temple offers daily classes ranging from early morning to evening, accommodating nearly 500 students. It has a rich history starting from a modest loft with no heat or electricity, demonstrating the dedication to preserving Shaolin heritage. Highlights include authentic training in Shaolin kung fu, teachings of Chan Buddhism, and the personal guidance of Shifu Shi Yan Ming, whose reputation has attracted celebrities as students. Additionally, the temple’s recent acquisition of 80 acres in Middletown, New York, points to exciting future developments with a permanent home for Shaolin practice that blends the spiritual and physical disciplines surrounded by nature. This makes the USA Shaolin Temple a remarkable destination not only for martial arts training but also for cultural exchange, spiritual growth, and community connection.

The best Shaolin school around in America. Sifu Shi Yan Ming is a great teacher, friend and martial artist! Highly recommend anyone around NY to give his school a visit! I had the privilege training under Him at Chambersburg PA when He visited our school Zen Dragon School of Martial Arts. " More Chi, Train Harder" is his slogan. I dwell on that quote every time I train!

I started training at the USA Shaolin Temple because I wanted to learn authentic Kung Fu from a legitimate Kung Fu Master, Shifu Shi Yan Ming. Little did I know that my Shaolin Education would go far beyond just the practice of martial arts. Since training at the temple, I have learned authentic Kung Fu, but I have also learned about community, respecting myself, the spiritual practices of Chan Buddhism, and much more. Practicing Kung Fu is now a key factor in my life to help me maintain my physical, and mental health, and is a great way to deal with, and let go of life’s stressors. Training with Shifu Shi Yan Ming has also taught me to push, and challenge myself which has greatly enhanced all other aspects of my life, and has led to many journeys that I would not have gone on before my training.

For over 15 years I had the dream of training here. In 2017 I finally had the opportunity to move NYC and make it happen. The prices are steep but I knew that going in. I expected at least a mildly warm welcome but received the opposite. With that cost and a Buddhist philosophy I was really taken aback by it. I did an introductory Tai-Chi class (taught by a student) and liked it enough to want to see how the Saturday morning dharma talks were before finalizing my entry as a student. I walked in on Saturday morning to an extremely rude Sifu and a group of students. He was bragging about dinner with Trump and watching CNN. I left and never returned. Only after I found excellent training a few blocks away did I learn about the temple's reputation for being over priced, pretentious training and an unsafe environment for women. It took a while to get over the disappointment but in the end it was fuel for my Tai-Chi training and education.

More chi Train Harder. Great place to train Kung Fu. From the first time I walked into the temple I knew this place was the real deal. Students were lined up in 2 columns training back and forth . The sifu was teaching as well as a couple advanced students. The energy in the temple was awesome. Lots of sweat and powerful noise coming from each student. This type of training is the foundation of shaolin Kung Fu. The USA Shaolin temple was calling my name from that day forward. I started training at the temple for years and only stopped going because of work and moving out of the city. This place will change your mind and change your body. I highly recommend the USA Shaolin temple.

A colleague introduced me to USA Shoalin Temple several years ago and I have been training there ever since. Not only will you get an incredible workout but you will find an incredible community of students ready and eager to embrace new students into the family. The Shaolin experience is so much more than just a workout program or your typical martial arts training. At temple you work out your mind as much as your body in what Sifu calls action meditation which you can apply to all areas of your life. In fact I have found that the key to how quickly or slowly you progress has a much greater correlation to your focus on mediation than your physical ability, which becomes even more clear when you consider that their are students of all ages, backgrounds, body types and physical abilities who excel in class. The people you will meet in class come from all walks of life and there is very much a family feel which is another reason why you will find multiple students in nearly every class that have trained under Sifu for years.
