Tons of parking areas (but do get there early for best options). Steeply sloped hillside area for blankets or chairs. We used a blanket and pillows. Stage is well lit, sound carries easily. We watched “Bring It On” and made our donations to the concessions and bucket brigade. Single bathroom facilities get VERY busy during intermission so we opted for the port-a-potty’s (darker but faster). Handwashing station was also there. After the show, as we walked back to our parking area, the view of downtown was spectacular (beforehand too but I only took a nighttime shot).

I watched Julius Ceaser in May 2025 and Legally Blonde in July 2024 here. It’s such a wonderful experience, the artists are brilliant and put on a great show always. The hill is perfect for a good view from almost anywhere.

We took our kids to our first Zilker Hillside Theatre show on a Thursday evening. It was the last weekend of the summer show, and although we arrived nearly an hour early, it was already packed! There is lots of free parking, however, be prepared to walk a good distance to the stage. The show is free, but they do accept donations, and also sell snacks, drinks and rent out chairs for the show. Although we came during the summer, the sun wasn't shining directly on the hill, so it was pleasant to sit and wait for it to start (although very hot, we worked up a sweat!). The actual show was amazing! The actors were great and the talent is outstanding. Sometimes the orchestra was louder than the singing, which made it a bit hard to hear. Be sure to get there really early for good seats! People started putting blankets down 2 hours before showtime. Although we weren't far from the stage, we were sort of behind the stage lights pole, and we couldn't see the actors at times. Also be prepared for people coming straight from the river, meaning many people were only in swimsuits and nothing else. Overall it was a great experience and we can't wait for the next show!

However, if you want to travel light, the venue’s concessions stand offers convenient snacks and refreshments without detracting from the outdoor, relaxed ambiance. Dressing comfortably, ideally for variable spring or summer evening weather, will keep everyone in good spirits throughout the performance.

Locating the theater is simple, situated at 2206 Barton Springs Road in Zilker Park, close enough to Austin’s city center to be easily accessible but far enough to provide a rural, scenic feel. Ride-sharing or public transit is advisable to reduce parking and traffic stress. Remember to bring insect repellent and perhaps a light jacket, as temperatures can drop after dusk.
